Separating one account into two
My son and I used the same itunes account for a long time, but now that he's on his own we need to figure out how to separate the music into two accounts. Is this possible? Help!

It is not possible to reassign the account used for purchased media. If you have any protected media purchased on your account then if you set up a separate account for him you will also need to let him authorize his library to your account.

Cindy, Copy the entire iTunes folder onto his machine. Then you can each delete whatever you don't want. Thus you will each have your own library going forward.
As TT2 notes, items purchased from the iTunes Store are tied in perpetuity to the account from which they were purchased. If you have any content requiring authorization, such as apps, videos, or songs that have not yet been upgraded, he will need to authorize his computer to your account.
Thanks for your reply!
Thanks for your reply! So we will be using the same account on two different computers?
That's how I do it, two daughters now live away from home each with computers authorised to my iTunes account. Each could also set up their own accounts but so far in practice we've carried on using the one account. If they get a gift card for a birthday for example, they redeem and spend it on my account.

Cindy, Up to you of course, and I don't know your son's age, but kids don't stay kids forever. Sooner or later they may have their own computer or their own dorm room or their own apartment or their own family. IMHO, the sooner they start their own account, the better.
Each library can be authorised for up to five different accounts so getting a new account doesn't have to mean he has to lose access to any of the content he has now...
