Can I install windows 8 through boot camp?

The beta just came out and I was curious if I burned the iso to a dvd, could I install it through bootcamp.

Macbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7)

(Windows 8) Developer Preview ISO installed at Boot Option to E: created with "Shrink" of Windows 7 C: drive. No bootcamp allocation used since space - a drive in my case - already allocated to Windows 7.

I chose this option because to have done install within Windows 7 would be too dangerous. Not so for Ubuntu 11.04 which is seen as a program that can be uninstalled via Programs and Features, although it is an OS. The Windows startup black screen boot then has a selection list including Windows 7, Ubuntu and Windows Developer Preview.

In W 8, I.E. is version 10 and Media Player is a higher version than the W 7. MCE is not there.

A problem encountered was bootcamp driver installs: from 2.0 through 3.2 the Mac Pro 3.1 aluminum keyboard DVD eject and audio keys were not functioning. When I ran the Lion drivers update did so as admin, selecting Windows 7 compatibility and this fixed keyboard.

You may find loss of the start menu/program list a pain. Had to make shortcuts for Msconfig, CMD, Paint etc. Security Essentials is strangely not included

Also found that Restart/Shutdown could only be done by logging off account at which time they become available.

And as it is still an early beta and you have no support from Microsoft for it, I would recommend to install this into the free virtualization software VirtualBox.

Would you get the Windows version of VirtualBox and install it in the BootCamp partition, or would you get the OS X version and install it there? I'm trying to figure out how I want to do this. 😕

Thanks in advance! 😁

Planning to use a small SSD or another hard drive for Windows 8?

You DO want to clone Windows 7 first. No, "I don't do backups."

Clone Windows and you can upgrade and keep all your settings.

Download from MSDN is going slow, maybe if I had an acct it wouldn't be and not on public shared server?

burning a DVD or flash memory, doing it from inside Windows 7 (even if 7 is currently a VM)

Thinking out loud, but I would be more worried that VMs like VB and even Fusion may not work, I'm sure they are anxious to run VMs under Windows 8 and tap into VHD and ISO support as well.

Lion broke Fusion, VB, Parallels, even Firefox. So I would say Mac OS is the most fragile place to be running 8. Get 8 running under 7 - or for those with nothing critical or business related, looks interesting, One OS for desktop but also for mobile devices. Instead of making Mac OS into iOS.

You can do either, depending on if you want to dual boot or not, how much disk space free under each.

From Windows 7 you could use VHD and that or any VM can be on non-startup disks.

I think I'm going to do that. If push came to shove, I could delete my entire Windows 7 BootCamp partition and reinstall, but I really woulnd't want to screw up my Lion partition!

So... I guess I'll burn my .iso to disk and see what happens! Thanks! 😁

Make a couple backups and clones first. Clone and TimeMachine for Mac, and also one for Windows. Might want to use Windows Easy Transfer to save all your (hidden also) AppData and non system/apps to another (NTFS) formatted drive.

The download for 8 started very very slowly but then took off - I was thinking it would be a couple hours at the rate it was going. In fact a lot of net traffic (Twitter for one, Target, others) have been extremely slow today.

Do you think it'll interfere with the Mac side? I can't imagine it would, but I'll be sure to do a TM backup first just in case! 😼

Eh, there's nothing on that partition that it would really bother me to lose. I'll put my documents on a flash drive and then I'll be good to go!

I started the download, saw it was slow, went downstairs to scoop the cat litter and feed the cats, and when I came back up, it had finished! I was quite surprised by that development!

If you or anyone knows how, that would be amazing.

It would, right? 😁

Otherwise, it's not worth it for me to go through the hassle of installing windows 8 in it's buggy current state and replacing my windows 7 data and settings.

I'm going to try Probe_Droid's suggestion and use VirtualBox. Downloaded and installed on my Windows 7 partition... now all I have to do is install Windows 8 on my shiny new virtual machine! 😎
