Lion Mail - message invisible when opened

When I open a new email message in Mail, the message doesn't appear and nothing appears to happen. Only when I click again anywhere on the screen does the message appear. This behavior makes it seem as if the opened message is "hidden" behind the full screen app.

Conditions under which this happens:

• whether I click or press CMD-O to open the message
• only in full screen mode
