To use the smartboard as a smartboard requires equiping your iPad with an App like Logmein so that you can remotely control the computer connected to the smartboard.
This subject is discussed here: http://ipadacademy.com/2011/08/how-to-use-the-ipad-with-a-smart-board-connecting -the-ipad-and-smart-board
The iPad will not connect directly to a smart board. You can connect the iPad to the projector and show the iPad image on the board, but the board's interactive features will not control the iPad. As Jim said, you can use the iPad to control a computer connected to the projector.
If you have the vga adapter you can view the iPad on projector. If the SmartBoard is bluetooth connected how can I get the iPad to acknowledge the SmartBoard bluetooth signal? I have tried it and the iPad wont pick up the board's bluetooth signal.
You can't. The iPad bluetooth only works with keyboards, audio out, and mobile hot spot for the iPad. Even if you could, Smart has not developed a software package for the iPad, so you wouldn't be able to do much more than view the iPad through the projector (i.e. you wouldn't be able to use any of the interactive features).
Apple TV(HDMI output) connected top a converter box that cxonverts HDMI to composite video / audio./ From there connect composite video / audio to SmartBoard. I found my HDMI to composte converter on ebay. Cablestogo my also have it.
Is this still true? So if I project my iPad onto a SmartBoard, using a particular app, the students will not be able to interact with the app on the SmartBoard, only with the iPad? Sorry for my confusion!
iPad Classroom Workflow is one of the most complex questions one can ask in education, for the are many variables involved. My trainer classroom is configured in the following way:
I have a PC that runs Win7 and is attached to CPS IR system by eInstruction, Active Slate by Promethean, and the 1610 SmartBoard by The Vga from the PC is routed through the document camera and then to ceiling-mounted BenQ short throw projector that displays exactly to the SmartBoard. The PC runs Splashtop2 remote software that permits it to be controlled by the New iPad in my hand. The projector has an Apple TV 2 directly attached to it with an HDMI Cable.
The PC displayes its normal content including the CPS software and most recent eInstruction Device Manager to interact with the Mobi tablet and Active Inspire to communicate with both the Active Slate or Active Expression clickers. Few classrooms have both CPS and Active clickers, so your configuration may not be this complex.
The basic requirement for the Apple TV is that it be on the same network as the iPad, something that is made more difficult by Apple's lack of support in the Apple TV for enterprise WPA network logins. As a work-around, (are you listening, Apple?), I use my iPhone on my own 4G network to provide that common login for the iPad and the Apple TV In the room. This puts the Ipad and Apple TV together and permits Airplay mirroring.
Once mirrored, I can use Splashtop app to connect to, and remotely run the computer. Thus, anything that I do on the SmartBoard shows up on both the iPad and the PC, and we can even use the SmartBoard to send this image with markup directly to the printer. The printer must also be located on the same Wi-Fi network to use Airprint, therefore we use it wired to the PC via USB port and the Wi-Fi is running on the iPhone network. By now, many of you are asking, "Are you crazy?, very fair question.
Please note, this particular JROTC classroom is set up as the Technology Demonstrator classroom. If you'd like to see the actual hardware in use, you may reach us at mansfieldweb for the Mansfield Independent School District.
PogoPossum,
I see you are onto just about every iPad <-> Smartboard conversation and I object to this statement that you repeat in just about every conversation:
>There would need to be a SmartBoard app designed for the iPad,
And thus you are placing the blame where it is NOT due. The blame for this not working should be rightfully put on the shoulders of Apple, and Apple only. They are the ones that are blocking BlueTooth input from mice. (At least you have more recently admitted that!)
But as to the SmartBoard app...
Why? Why could I not use ANY app on the iPad, since the Smartboard is a projected image of whatever is on the iPad, and the Smartboard (if Apple allowed it) would be a "mouse" interface back to the iPad, enabling you to start, work with, modify or whatever, ANY app that runs on the iPad.
Or do you not get what peope are wanting to do? Please explain why you think a specific iPad app by Smart would need to be developed? What would you envisage it would do? What magic would it weave? What if I wanted to show the students how to use Pages on the iPad, projected up to the screen, with input coming from touching and dragging on the Smartboard and maybe an external BT keyboard as well.. Are you saying this would not be possible? If you are... I'm sorry to say that your understanding of how these things interalate and connect is lacking, and you should not be speaking with any of the authority you think you command.

Which do you want to do - connect to a projector or control from the smartboard? For the former, you'll need to purchase a VGA adaptor and use it to connect the iPad.
this is all I want to be able to do, how do I set it up?
Still true. There would need to be a SmartBoard app designed for the iPad, as well as for the iPad to have seperate Video and USB connections.
