No sound in quicktime movies

Whenever I play a movie in Quicktime, either in the stand-alone player or inside of a web browser or in iTunes, there is no sound. I've even tried reinstalling the program and I still get this problem. I can't think of anything that could have caused this and quicktime is the only video player that I'm having this problem with. Any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

i'm going to sound like a total idiot, but...

i'm having this problem, too, and want to do the uninstall and then install the old version option, but -- and i warned you i'm gonna sound way ignorant -- will that uninstalling of itunes erase what's in my library right now? i most defintely do not want to have to upload all my cds again. (-;

waiting patiently to be told i don't need to worry about this. (-;

thanks!

Here's a summary, from this discussion thread and my experience, of the problem and a possible solution. Feel free to clarify or expand.

As I see it, there are two problems with the current version (7.04) of Quicktime for Windows:

1) movie clips have video but no sound either in Quicktime Player or in a Web browser via QT plug-in.

and

2) Quicktime doesn't uninstall completely, making it frustratingly difficult to downgrade to a previous version that does work. i.e., after unistall, installing QT 7.03 displays an alert that a newer version is already installed.

One might consider the fact that iTunes and Quicktime are so tightly coupled being a third problem. I don't know if an already-installed iTunes 6.0.2.23 (QT 7.04's version of iTunes) will work with QT 7.03, but I'm fairly certain if you install iTunes 6.0.2.23, it will upgrade Quicktime to the partially-functioning 7.04 version of Quicktime.

So, the current work-around is to use the Add or Remove Programs control panel from an administrative privileges account to uninstall Quicktime (and iTunes I would think) and attempt a downgrade to QT 7.03 and iTunes 6.0.0.18. As posted in this thread, the iTunes installer, "iTunesSetup 6.0WIN2KXP.exe", is available at

http://public.www.planetmirror.com/pub/apple/iTunes/

By the way, this might be overkill but before uninstalling iTunes/Quicktime, I also exited Quicktime from the system tray icon and stopped both the iPodService and iTunesHelper services. In XP Pro, it's Start:Control Panel:Administrative Tools:Services, find the item, open it and click "Stop".

If the downgrade installation fails with "newer version of Quicktime is already installed", you need to do additional file and directory cleanup before another attempt.

I found a post on "Manually Uninstalling Quicktime" post on this "Quicktime Error" discussion thread

http://forum.worldstart.com/printthread.php?t=65812.

Note, I only used the directory listing to check for uninstallation flotsam. You do have to have "show hidden files and folders" enabled under the Tools: Folder Options menu's View tab to see the items to delete. After your uninstall, look for Quicktime or iTunes folders, files, or shortcuts in these locations:

C:\Program Files
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs
C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch
C:\WINDOWS\system32\quicktime
C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\PLUGINS

I ignored the rest of that poster's message on manual registry cleanup, etc.

After my uninstall, manual file and directory deletion, and running Registry Mechanic to clean orphan registry values, I found I could install the working, earlier version of the iTunes/Quicktime bundle, "iTunesSetup 6.0WIN2KXP.exe", noted earlier.

Best of luck,

Paul

I have the same problem here. I have no sound on all my MOV movies or iTunes music videos. Even if i tried to play my MOVs in realplayer i cannot get sound.

Also, when i tried to adjust my preferences Quicktime would not listen. All my preferences reverted to the "original" setting even if i checksed safe mode and click apply. I tried it after i took Quicktime off the system tray or on it,, but it wont budge. Any help?

I have tried this fix 3 separate times, 3 separate versions, but it keeps showing up as V7.

Any chance this mirror is somehow attached to V7, or possibly, my registry won't let go of V7.

I wouldn't be surprised. Trying to fix jerky video

Well guys; I'm out of here. Finally managed to get QT completely

uninstalled off of my system.

MANUAL UNINSTALL INSTRUCTIONS POSTED HERE

http://forum.worldstart.com/printthread.php?t=65812

BTW ... that manual install took me a little over one and a half hours. I

must have deleted over 100 different registry keys. I have never had to do

all of that to get rid of a program, but something tells me that's not

normal.

BTW2 ... if you decide to use the manual uninstall directions from that link. The instructions reference C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Microsoft... but it does not mention the folder located inside the Application folder named Apple Computer. I went ahead and deleted that folder for all of this computer's users as well.

No telling if I could have left it there.

I never did find a safe previous version iTunes (a previous version mirror

was referenced somewhere, but when I tried to install it from there, it

tried to install QT 7). I was lucky enough to still have my CD from my

iShuffle that I got back in February '05, and so I am back to 6.5.2

GUESS WHAT!!!

All my jerky audio/distorted audio/skippy audio issues have resolved.

Should I risk installing QT 7 to prove a point???

Nah, I won't take my chances. If Apple can't admit that there is an issue,

I can't admit there's a QT 7.

I was having the same problems as described above, here is my fix- and IT WORKED- for me atleast- and with keeping 7.04!

My Problems: no sound when playing .mov files that previously had audio, no sound on trailers on the web, just no sound in quicktime in general. Sound Familiar?

Here is MY fix; it is easy and will take just one -two minutes, depending on how fast you read and can click your mouse.

Ready, ok, here we go

Open QuickTime

Click Edit>Preferences>Quicktime Player Preferences

Click on the "Audio" Tab

Click on the button "select Audio Playback and Recording Devices"

Click on the "Audio" tab

Click the button "Advanced"

Click the tab "Performance"

Here is the problem. You will probably notice that you have no hardware acceleration. It seems that Quicktime needs CPU time for audio- not just relying on the sound card. So give it some hardware accleration!!!
I had no acceleration (for better computer performance) but this is what was screwing up Quick Time.

Let me know if this worked for you. Hopefully it did.

I would rather apple would not have bothered releasing this software at all, I have tried all of the above suggetsions for getting the audio playback, to no avail, oh I tell a lie it worked once but it was just a load of very unlpeasant digital distortion. remind me what was it that I spent my money on for the qt 7 upgrade? I feel like I have been conned, if a person selling a car acted like this they would be taken to court. I suppose apple's stock arrogant answer would be "get a mac", after working as a service technician for a pro audio company and seeing loads of them coming through the door for us to assess and send on to the apple repair centre only for them to take 3 months to get round to looking at problems I suppose it should have set the alarm bells ringing. I cant even get my money back because of "the piracy issue" Why anyone would want to counterfeit quicktime for windows is completely beyond me. absolute rubbish.

Try this.

1) Right-Click on the QuickTime Icon in your SysTray.
(Lower right-hand corner of a default windows screen.)
2) From the presented menu select. "QuickTime Preferences"
3) From the "QuickTime Settings" dialog select the "Audio" tab.
4) In the 'Sound Out' section change the 'Rate' from 44.1 kHz to 48 kHz.
5) Hit the 'Ok' button to exit the "QuickTime Settings" dialog box.
6) Try playing a movie.

Rates: equal to or slower then 44.1 kHz caused movie audio to be greatly delayed and to strutter when viewed from the web and I got no sound at all when playing *.mov files directly from my hard drive.

Rates: 48 khz and faster worked fine for me.

I've got a Toshiba Satellite Pro laptop and a custom built PC both running Win XP. The laptop has standard onboard sound and the PC has a Creative SB Live! card. I have sound on the laptop but not the PC.

I have tried all above fixes and would be interested to know if it is an issue with soundcards that does not affect PCs with onboard sound.

Thanks

Nick
