why is automatic login disabled on my Lion Server
I want to use my server for unattended use, but automatic login is disabled. Is there any way to re enable it?

System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Options > Automatic login
My problem, phrased badly originally sorry, is that the whole option is greed out, so I can't select it
Is there a padock icon in the lower left corner? It should be "open" for you to be able to make changes. Change the status by clicking on it.
In addition to what Spinland says, it is possible to disable automatic login in the Security & Privacy preference pane, and probably also by using Managed Preferences. Of these Security & Privacy is the most likely.
Thanks for the suggestion, but already knew that. It's still grayed out even when it's unlocked
Wow, that's one of the new items I hadn't noticed in Lion. It's a bit inconsistent with usual Apple work flows to have one setting needs two different settings in two different places before the ability can be used. Thanks heaps, problem solved
KiwiSue,
The reason that the Automatic login option is greyed out, is because you haven't clicked on the authentication lock on the lower left-hand side of the window. Once you click on it and authenticate with an administrator's username and password you can then change the automatic login setting.
Cheers.
If FileVault is turned on, you won't be able to enable automatic login.
This solved it for me. Not solved.... answered is more appropriate. Thanks jigp88.
