itunes is unable to locate my device to sync - why?

I'm unsure why this issue has occured but I am no longer able to preview devices on the right side of I-tunes in order to sync Iphone 4 to computer (windows). Does anyone have any suggestions? I've ensured itunes exe is running (task manager) as well as reinstalled the software but no change. I'm frustrated...
