email clients won't connect

I bought a used black MacBook from Canada. It is running OS 10.6.5. I recently tried to set up email clients, both Entourage 2008 and Mail. Neither will connect to my live.com POP account. I either get the "timed out" error or some other error I don't remember the code of. I have set my incoming server to the 587 port; I tried turning off my Firewall. There must be some setting somewhere in 10.6.5 I am missing, because this is happening on both Entourage and Mail. Any hints?

Hello Mr. Karl,

The set up process of Entourage email client into your Mac machine is not so difficult. You will need to following some simple steps for completing the process after that you can access emails with information into Entourage email client.

What does Mail/Window/Connection Doctor Show? If the server is red, select it and look at the Show Details box.
