SSD Noise on MacBook Air Mid 2011

Hello Apple World!

I took the plunge and last week I purchased a new MacBook Air, 1.8 GHz Core i7, 4 GB RAM and 256 GB SSD Hard Drive. I am extremely happy with the machine. It works flawlessly and it is a breeze to do things with its fast everything.

However, I noticed a funny noise. It sounds like a spinning hard disk, when I know that there are no spinning parts on this things. Not even e DVD drive! I hear the noise every time I scroll a page on Safari and also when the computer is idle for a while, as if it was running a script or something... This would not be an issue if the noise did not sound like a 7,200 rpm *normal* SATA HDD.

Has anyone experienced anything like this? Thanks in advance for all your help. Have a wonderful weekend.

For sure the noise does not come from the SDD and for sure there is no room for an HDD in the MBA so the noise has to come from somewhere else. Maybe the noise comes from your speakers. Try turning down the volume or plugging in headphones and check if the noise is gone. Try to isolate the noise coming from the fan. You should be able to hear it if you put your ear close to the left upper side of your MBA. That way you can make sure it is not the noise of the fan.

OK fellow MacHeads. I figured out what is the noise source. It's the POWER SUPPLY!! That's right: the power supply. It makes the noise or what I believe now to be that of electric current passing through its circuits. I have looked at the other two Mac laptops I have at home (MBP 13" and MBP 15") and none of them has that problem. I did all kinds of tests with the "noisy" PS and it made the noise regardless of what wall plug it was plugged into, or what type of machine it was feeding power to.

I am taking it to my local Apple store this afternoon and ask for a replacement. At least it's not the SSD! Thanks for all you help guys. Have a wonderful weekend.

I had the exact same problem and had it exchanged once and same thing happen again I went back they wont let me. I was forced to stick with it. This is why apple fails. I hv 2 days left before I can not return it anymore. I am going to the apple store 2mr to address this plus another problem. If they wont exchange for me, Im just gonna flip and return it. =)
