Function Keys on MacBook Pro Lion

The function keys on my MacBook Pro (Lion) don't work. I can no longer change the volume or screen brightness. This is also the case for an external mac keyboard that I use. The fn key does nothing. I tried rebooting and looking at the keyboard preferences, but nothing helps.
