I'm recording into Garageband via Zoom R16 and I get noise on the signal. Not permanent or background noise, but only "on" the sound. Why is that?

I'm recording into Garageband via Zoom R16 and suddenly I get noise on the track when I record. Not permanent or background noise, but only when there's a sound. Why is that?
