How lock/unlock SIM PIN?

I just activated my ATT account and see there is an option to lock/unlock SIM PIN. At the ATT store they just said leave it alone but I'd like to be a ble to lock/unlock the SIM even if it's a little extra bother each time I turn on the cell network as distinguished from the WiFi networks. If some unauthorizedd person gets in control of my iPad I don't want them running up a big data transfer bill. I suspect the ATT clerk didn't really know how and I can't find any reference to doing this in the iPad manual.

The suggested link was helpful but doesn't really give a step by step instruction on setting the SIM PIN the first time and it's definitely not intuitive. It's sad if the only recourse is to go to the ITT store to find out if they have a default DIM PIN already on the card which, in fact, came with the iPad from Apple. I suspect there's no PIN on a new iPad with the SIM already installed but I'm leery of trying to put in a lock PIN since I've already used up 2 of my 3 tries.

I would not try a third time either. I don't have a 3G iPad but apparently AT&T knows the PIN and why they don't give it to the customer is beyond me. did you look in the Settins>Cellular Data>PIN ...

I agree that the article doesn't explain it so that I would know what to do. Did AT&T install the card for you? Did they give you documentation with it - like maybe it came in a little case where you might find the PIN?

Sorry - just read that you bought the device from Apple - still no documentation anywhere???

Wish I had known that you tried two times already as I may have suggested 0000 as the code - that may not have worked anyway - but just read it on another site - not an AT&T site but it sort of makes sense in a way.

The SIM card was already installed by Apple when I got thenew iPad and a clerk at the ATT store took it out when he set up my account (to get its ID # I thought) and activated it. I didn't watch to see if he might have switched cards but I don't think he did and I certainly didn't get iny information booklet or directions about installing my own PIN number for the SIM card. I'l lgo back to the store tomorrow to see if they have some magic number.

Success! You have to have the cellular data service turned on in Settings. Then choose SIM PIN. Then get screen to lock/unlokck SIM with blank entry space. Enter your desired PIN. It will be rejected and it's 3x and out when it then asks you for your PUD (Presonal Unlocking Key). This you get from your cell phone service provider (ATT) by logging in to and viewing your account which gives you access to the PUD for your particular SIM card.

You enter the PUD when requested and, hopefully, it's successful. It then allows you to enter your personal PIN for that SIM and device.

It's probably best to use the iPad with the lock/unlock SIM PIN turned off since I'm not sure that "find my ipad" would work with the SIM locked since I presume it's necessary to be connected to a cellular newtwork for this service to work properly although it seems to locate my iPad here at home connected only by my WiFi network and the cell service turned off by knowing the location of my home network.

They ( Apple/ATT) could sure do a better job of explaining this!
