header only on first page

Im trying to write a paper with two column format and im trying to get the title above both of the columns not just on one side or the other. so i used the header field but now the title is on all the pages i just want it on the first page only. is there an easy way to fix this?

thanks

I've never understood the reasoning behind using the header when you only want the info on the first page. Headers & footers are specifically for repeating information. But whatever the reasoning, Unlike other word processors I've used, Pages doesn't automatically suppress the headers & footers on the first page of a section. If you entered data in the header or footer on the first page, that will be displayed & suppressed on the remainder. To suppress it on the first page, the information must be entered on the second or later page.

But there are other ways to do what you wanted. Personally, I'd use a text box but you could also use a layout break setting the columns to one before the break & two after. Both of this options let you "recover" the space taken up by the header on the following pages.

Thank you Cameron! Here's why I needed a different first page header (because there may be others that are in the same predicament). For APA format, the first page must have "Running head:" before the title. Every subsequent page must only have the title. I knew how to do it in Word, but thought it was not possible in Pages. I was saving as a doc and doing it in Word before I printed. Hope this helps others. I'm certainly happy I don't have to boot up Windows in order to do this anymore 🙂.

It's the simple things I miss 🙂 Thanks for this suggestion. I wanted to do the exact same things as the OP but I only wanted the text on the first page where it was oriented higher than the rest of the page. This worked perfectly! Thanks.
