HELP CONNECTING WIRED APPLE KEYBOARD TO MACBOOK PRO

i got a wired apple keyboard(with numeric pad) from a friend today and its not functioning right, certain buttons work and some dont(majority dont). i know the keyboard itself works cause it was connected to my friends imac which he sold.

i am connecting to a macbook pro. i read online that this is common when connecting to a macbook pro.

i was wondering if there is anyway of fixing this like programming the keyboard or something. please help guys. first post for me.
