I feel really silly asking this, but I can't find the answer anywhere. I have files that I no longer want on my desktop. If I drag the icon to the trash, will that delete the icon without deleting the file from my computer?

no by moving them into the trash you are deleting the whole file. If you dont want them on your desktop but want to keep them move them somewhere else on your computer.
If the file is not an alias (a small arrow at the bottom left corner) then it will delete the entire file or program. Most program file are stored in the Applications folder you will need to check that folder for programs.
If it's a mounted disk image, dragging it to the Trash won't delete the dmg or other image file.
