Tenfourfox

We are still running Tiger on our MBP and we plan to continue to do so indefinitely.

We are also currently using Firefox 3.6.22. We know that Ff will eventually stop doing security updates for 3.6. and we'll have to go elsewhere for an excellent browser.

BDAqua has kindly tested Tenfourfox for me and said it works OK on an Intel Mac.

I read the FAQ on TFF's site ( the one at macupdate, since Floodgate, the real site? seems to be dead) which seem to indicate that it might work on an Intel Mac, but that it is not supported.

Is TFF providing security updates? since it's site, Floodgate is gone?

So -

- has anyone else used TFF on an Intel running Tiger successfully?

- and can I install it alongside Ff 3.6.22 or is that asking for trouble? (again, the FAQ's seem to warn against this but I'm not sure how it'll do on an Intel Mac) Is there a way to keep Ff 3.6 installed until I figure out if TFF works for me - is a SuperDuper backup with Ff3.6.22 enough or should I dup my Ff before installing TFF?

-which of the several versions of TFF should I download for my Intel MBP - the G3, G4, G5 - 6.0.1? or what??

Thanks to BDA for testing it for me - I just need more info before I proceed.

The specs for TenFourFox says

"TenFourFox is a fast, efficient web browser based on Firefox 5, but compatible with 10.4 and PowerPC."

Doesn't mention Intel Macs. I have both TenFourFox & FF3.6.22 on the same HD running Tiger on my G4 MDD. You can't have both open at the same time. Both versions seem to use the same preference files.

I can confirm it works on IntelMacs, at least my Intel iMac under 10.6/10.5 with Rosetta installed, haven't tried it in the far less useful Lion that doesn't support Rosetta without a hack...

Hardware Overview:

Model Name: iMac

Model Identifier: iMac7,1

Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo

Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz

Number Of Processors: 1

Total Number Of Cores: 2

L2 Cache: 4 MB

Memory: 6 GB

Bus Speed: 800 MHz

Boot ROM Version: IM71.007A.B03

SMC Version (system): 1.21f4

- which of the several versions of TFF should I download for my Intel MBP - the G3, G4, G5 - 6.0.1? or what??

I think the G4 version would be best overall.

Thanks TMM,

I found this which certainly confirms what you say. I should have been more thorough in my research and found this earlier:

...Firefox 3.6 cannot be run simultaneously with TenFourFox, because as we mentioned above, to the Mac TenFourFox is Firefox. Also, do again remember that older versions of Firefox may cease to work after upgrading to TenFourFox due to incompatible profiles. You may wish to use specific profiles for these older Firefox versions if you must run them (but it is strongly advised you do not, as these versions of Firefox likely have security issues).

There is currently no problem switching back and forth from Firefox 3.6 and TenFourFox as long as you quit one before starting the other. This may not be the case in the future, however, when Mozilla ceases to support Firefox 3.6. That will likely occur by the end of 2011.

I assume by older Ff they don't mean 3.6.x. (since Ff v 4, 5, and 6 are now out there...) I hope I can get TFF working before Ff stops doing security updates. You have both installed and operating just fine, right without any fancy separation of profiles and the like?

I couldn't tell from the TFF site which seems to be partially down, wheh and how they actaully do do security updates.

Thanks for your input,

Thanks BDA.

Further confusion on which version.

I found this:

Intel Macintoshes are not supported, but the G3 build is known to run under Rosetta in 10.5.8 and should run under Rosetta in Intel 10.4.11.

Make sure you select the appropriate build for your Mac from the download page. The G3 version will run on any supported Macintosh, but it will not take advantage of the additional features of G4 or G5 processors. The G4 and G5 versions will not run correctly on a G3, and the G5 version will perform worse on non-G5 Macintoshes.

If you are using a G4, you should try to choose the correct version for your processor generation (7400 or 7450 "G4e") as performance may be impaired if you run the wrong one. If you don't know which G4 processor you have, the instructions in WhichVersion will tell you how to find out

here: http://code.google.com/p/tenfourfox/wiki/ReleaseNotes401

and this:

Which version?

TenFourFox comes in tuned builds for specific processor families. Choosing the wrong one could make the application crash, or run poorly. While the G3 version is generic and will run on any supported Macintosh, it is also the poorest performer on later Power Macs; similarly, you cannot run the G4 or G5 versions on a G3 as the application will behave incorrectly.

Here's how to select which one you need:

• G3 and G5 owners, just download the G3 and/or G5 build, respectively. These versions run on any G3 or G5 Power Macintosh.

• G4 owners, you need to determine if your G4 is a 7450-series CPU ("G4e"), such as the 744x or 745x series, or a 7400-series CPU, such as the 7400 and 7410. Typically the "G4e" series of CPU are in most G4s at and over 733MHz.

The wrong version will work on your machine, but will not run as well.

here: http://code.google.com/p/tenfourfox/wiki/AAATheFAQ

So, I still don't know which version to use. You say G4 but there are 2 different ones - they seem to be saying G3 runs OK under Rosetta, but you say G4 does also - so, which G4 did you choose?

And, which TFF? 6.0.1? or the new 7x? Choices, choices and if I choose incorrectly, will the MBP crash out of control or can I return to Ff 3.6.22 and sort things out again?

You know me, I need a clear road map to a solution.

Thanks as ever,

Mrs H

I've done yet more reading and searching and am even more confused (typical 🙂)

I have learned a lot about TFF and its doctor founder who no longer has a website due to...

It looks like the more recent versions of TFF no longer support plugins - and don't support those for Intel Macs.

The only plugins I use (thanks to advice given on another thread) are NoScript and WOT and I can't figure out if these can be used on the newer TFF's.

It also appears that the newer versions of TFF won't support plugins (or am I reading more into this that it says?) but does that mean they won't work??:

As one more reminder, plugins are disabled by default, and are no longer supported. If you are new to this policy, refer to previous entries in this blog, or see this wiki entry on plugin support.

http://code.google.com/p/tenfourfox/wiki/ReleaseNotes401

Soooo - are there security updates for TFF?

And how recent a TFF should I use on an Intel Mac?

Do they do security updates?

And G4 version? - which - the faster I'm guessing? Which did you test on an Intel?

And finally - are there any other browsers (other than Safari which uses too much juice) that I can use on my Intel Mac running Tiger? I've searched - discovered Opera v10, but it's been surpassed by 11 - so I suspect that no more updates will be forthcoming.

Perhaps I should just stick to Ff 3.6.22 and hope for the best 😟 - but I fear that Ff will stop with updates by year's end.

Help!

What about it? 😀

Why not try all of these - should keep you occupied for a few hours!

Oh, and TFF is on version 5. Previous versions gave no end of trouble. Further updates are currently unobtainable as they are having a row with their ISP!

STICK WITH SAFARI!

STICK WITH SAFARI!

Hi, Klaus,

I knew you'd show up and say Safari! It used to be a real memory hog on the G4 and I have stayed away from it except to use it as my alternate browser in a pinch. I like the AddOns WOT and NoScript in Firefox and would like to find something else that has those options (or rather easy disabling options)

Problem is, I'm sticking with Tiger on Mr H's MBP and I don't think there are any more security updates for Safari - 4.1.3 is it? - for Tiger.

Please don't tell me to update from Tiger to SL 😐 - I will, eventually; but our scanner only works with Tiger and some other things which I can't now remember.

What I have thought to do is partition the MBP, and keep most of it at Tiger, and give some of it to SL, and have Mr H use the SL partition for browsing. I've partitioned external HD's into as many as 6 partitions but I've never done it on an internal HD and installed 2 OS's; it must be similar to running OS9 and Tiger on the G4. I'm pretty sure I could learn how to do it when I have to...

Your thoughts?

Actually, I'm running TFFG5 version 6.0.1, which I downloaded a few days ago and which seems very stable. Yesterday I also downloaded the beta version 7.0b.1, though I decided not to try it yet, as at this time it reports incompatibilities with several of my Add-Ons, which is a common, routine consequence of beta versions.

Both of the aforementioned versions of TFF can be currently downloaded at: http://tenfourfox.blogspot.com/
