dlink - macbook air problem

I have bought a dlink router, at first there was no problem, but later on my macbook air started using up to 40 min. to find the router, now it can't find it at all. What can I do to make my air find the router? I have a another PC with windows 7 that finds it, also my phone has no problem finding it. What is wrong?

MacBook Air, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Hello,

the dlink routers normally cause no serious problems with MAC's. The problem may be located in the settings of MAC and/or Router. Eventually also the Router have only a "hickup".

First Aid

  • Switch OFF the wireless network on your MBAir
  • delete the (your) network from the "known networks" list in the System Settings of your MBAir
  • reboot
  • rejoin the wireless

You may eventually also reset (start over) your dlink while on ALL wireless units in the net the WiFi is switched OFF.

Give the router a few minutes to run up

Then reconnect all participants one by one. Reconnecting the next one not until the previous have a clear connection to the wireless.

If none of the above solves the problem or you have already tried that, it would be very helpful if you may provide us with some infornation about your infrastructure and settings either in the router and the MBAir.

e.g.

router type

used protocol(s) with the router in your wireless network

used security method

used band (2.4GHz, 5GHz or mixed mode)

eventually used "older" systems in your wireless that eventually need compatibility mode

wireless configuration of your MBAir

and so on. Whatever you think it could be a useful information.

This will be very helpful for us to help you on fixing your problems.

to mention just one:

As I wrote: "normally" what means: in very most cases.

I had in real life situations (till now) no serious issues with dlink units.

In the cases I had a dlink involved in wireless issues, it was mostly a configuration or incompatibility problem found; e.g. with the "all in one" a/b/g and n in one network mode.

My macbook air: Mac OS X 10.6.8

My d-link: DIR-615

Somehow it works a few times, but most of the time, like 90% my mac can´t find the router.

I called apple for service, and they told me to make a new location for my network, I did this and called it "Home".

I live in a block, so there is alot of internets here, I can find plenty of different d-links, but I can´t find my own.

This is getting quite disturbing.

Hiccups between the computer and router sometimes occur and can be resolved by restarting the computer and/or router. This happens to me a couple times a year and was even more frequent before I put my WiFi base and router on an uninterruptible power supply.

Sometimes a computer decides it doesn't want to connect to a router it 'knows' about and simply deleting it from the list of known routers and reconnecting solves the problem. To try this, launch System Preferences, select Network, and click on the Advanced button. Here you'll see a list of all the remembered WiFi stations. Select yours and click on the minus sign button to delete it. While you are there if you see any others that you can't identify go ahead and delete them. Now return to the desktop, select the WiFi icon in the menubar and reconnect.

Make sure your router's security is set for WPA. Preferable is WPA2 personal but I'm not sure what options your router offers.

Finally it is worth using your router's configuration software to determine what firmware it is running and then go to the manufacturer's Web site to see if there's a more recent version. While troubleshooting customer issues I've found that their 'new' router is running outdated firmware and upgrading to the newest version fixes their issues.
