MBA 13 (new model 2011) heats up rapidly after wake up from sleep

Hi! I bought the MBA in August and I have installed all the firmware and software updates. After installing the EFI 2.1. in September I have the following issue. When opening the lid of the MBA after several hours of sleep, the CPU temp rises very fast without doing anything on the MBA (no Internet, no wordprocessinh, no nothing). I have Temperature monitor installed and after 4-5 minures CPU gets 70-80 Celsius with fan working very loud. When I close the lid for 3-4 second and then open it again the CPU temperatures gets normal - between 40-45 degrees. With Internet it is around 50 degrees - no fan, absolutely calm.

I have made two Lion installs yesterday - one a clean install (erasing HDD), and one with preserving programs and data. No result, same behavior. I suspect that it has something to do with the deep state sleep in hybernate status. And I suspect it is problem with EFI 2.1., because prior to this the MBA reacted normally after wake up frim sleep. I goodled around, checked English and German forum, but not a hint or solution.

I can get accustomed to this second opening of the lid, but I don't think it's normal. By the way, when I shut down the MBA and start up after a night or so, there is no such behavior. Only after wake up after many hours of sleep.

Any ideas or solutions?

Ok so I took it into the Genius Bar. He couldn't really do anything becuase I couldn't replicate the problem (as mentioned, it doesn't happen all the time on my MBA). He also said that there wasn't anything on their system about this problem being reported before.

So please folks, if you are having this issue, please report it to your local Genius Bar and maybe Apple will release a fix.

I have turned off the deep sleep mode for more than two weeks. There is no heating up issue anymore. I have however the impression that the MBA drains a bit more battery juice with deep sleep off. It's not a big difference, but it's there (maybe 4-5 % more). Therefore I completely turn off the MBA in the evening, when I finished my job. And in the morning I put it on again - closing the lid only during the day.

I can only hope to get a fix ASAP!

I continue to have the problem, and seem to be able to reproduce it relatively easily, just let the computer sleep for 90 minutes (I"m not sure of the exact amount of time) then wake it up, it will quickly shoot up to 90 C. Put it to sleep and then immediately wake it up, and it goes back to normal behavior until the next time I let it sleep for an extended duration.

I'll try to take it in to a genius, but it may be a week or so depending on my schedule.

I can't believe more people are complaining about this

Seeing and wondering the EXACT same thing. Sigh.

Really interesting. I tested this out this morning and it works very well.

Basically, I let my MBA sleep for about 2 hours which would normally cause the temps to spike when I opened it back up.

When I got to work, instead of plugging in the power and immediatly opening the lid, I plugged in the power and left the lid closed. I left it plugged in with the lid closed for about 4 minutes while I unpacked the rest of my stuff. When I opened the lid, sure enough the MBA was nice and cool with no spike in Temp.

Console says this:

10/11/11 9:42:14.000 AM kernel: Wake reason: EC.ACAttach (Maintenance)

10/11/11 9:46:23.000 AM kernel: Wake reason: EC.LidOpen (User)

So, it seems like the bug happens if you plug in the power and immediatly open the lid. When that happens something prevents that EC.LidOpen action from running which causes the temp spike. Perhaps when I get home tonight, I will just open the MBA without plugging in to power to see what happens.

Can anyone else confirm this?

Hopefully someone at Apple will notice this thread and fix. Or, offer to fly me out to Cupertino to consult and disucss on this very important issue. 🙂

I continue to have the problem after the EFI 2.2 update.

This is getting to be rediculous. This problem only started occurring after I updated to EFI 2.1. I thought for sure that EFI 2.2 would have addressed this issue, but apparently not. After waking from deep sleep, my computer will run at 85-90 C even though there is only a 1-2 % load on the CPU. After I force the computer to sleep again and then wake it up, it goes back to normal behavior and will operate in the 50 C range for the same CPU load.

How in the world do we get Apple to acknowledge this problem and fix it.
