Suddenly can't log in to Lion Server.app

For some reason this morning I am unable to log in to server.app. That is, I select my server from the Choose a Mac screen and click Continue, but when I try to log in the login dialog shakes as if I've entered the wrong information. I have entered and re-entered my username/password repeatedly without success.

I restored from a time machine backup and I am able to log in to server.app without issue *until I restart*, at which point I am unable to again.

Just so I'm clear, I'm able to log into the administrator account itself; I'm just unable to log into the server.app.

I'd appreciate any guidance; I'm a complete newbie to OS X server administration; I bought this Mac Mini with Lion Server so that I could VPN in to my home/office network remotely and I can't even get that to work properly.

Thanks in advance,

Peter

Hi There,

I am now having the same issue - can't log into Server App or Server Admin. In workgroup manager I can see that server admin is no longer a user but if I go to create I get messages saying that there is another user with same name.

I have run sudo launchctl list | grep -q com.apple.servermgrd && echo loaded || echo not loaded from terminal and he report back states that it is loaded.

I am now a bit stuck - any ideas?

Cheers

Stu

I just starter running into this. I can't log into Server.app. And ServerAdmin.app can't see the server, either, saying that it can't find it. Things were working in the past...

However, we did just change IP/Domain. We have a fixed IP from our ISP, but weren't using a specific domain name at first (i.e. we were using mac.example.private or some such). Then we got the domain name and told our ISP to configure the Internet's DNS servers with our fixed IP. Then we realized that we needed to configure rDNS so I had them do that. Now, I can't say when it broke exactly, as I didn't check between each of those last two steps.

Some things work (can VNC/ScreenShare, SSH into it, ping it, etc), but Server.app doesn't. I checked the two things mentioned in the thread above (whether the servermgr was loaded, and the .plist config file having the 'Disabled' field), but my server passes both of those tests (yes, its loaded, and the file doesn't have that field defined).

This is Lion 10.7.3 server.

Thanks,

J

So I picked up a client two months ago with a mac server (10.6.8). It had been sitting there un-used for 9 months. I created the network and configured services and users, in particular VPN. I got it all set up at the beginning of April. Mid-April I tested VPN again just to make sure it was working (it was).

Hadn't heard from them until today when they could not log into the CONSOLE. Not the app or whatnot, but the console. It shakes like a wrong password with the administrator user and does nothing with other users.

I was not able to VPN either but after a while I was able to and saw the symptoms myself via VNC. (I lost the VPN session and was no longer able to VPN back in.

I am able to SSH into the server with a user ID and SU to administrator (not able to ssh as administrator directly???).

I checked the update history and it has not had any updates since my work in April, nor is the command line update tool reporting any new updates available. So it has been running 10.6.8 for some time with no symptoms.

I checked the servermgrd is loaded.

Am I reading correctly that the resolution to the problem is upgrade the OS to 10.7.3 or newer????? And isn't that a paid upgrade? (seems fishy at best if that is the case). I don't see an OS update when I check system updates.

So they sit there with a $4000 server they can't do anything with. Help PLEASE?
