You're using OS X Lion. One of its new features is pressing and holding a key to select other special characters. The image below shows me holding down the "o" key in Pages. If I'm not mistaken, the 2nd option in the list is what you want. If I were to press 2 at this point, the 2nd option would be inserted into my document.

This WILL work for your mac. Press Alt/option with the letter u but be sure to LET GO of both and THEN press desired letter for which you want an umlaut.

(Alt/Option) + (letter u) .....LET GO..... (the letter)

e.g:

Alt/Option + u [THEN] a = ä

I was stuck with this in the past and no matter how many times I try to remember the solution it always escapes me when it is out of practice... and I end up with a lot ååååå's, århuses, and ålborgs.

Keyboard viewer will show you characters available from the keyboard, including the zero-width 'dead key' accent characters shown in orange highlight in the image. These are applied in the same manner as has been described:

  • press option-accent key
  • release
  • press letter key

The accent will be applied only to letters with which it is normally used.

I am still on Snow Leopard, so I don't know whether this also applies in Lion, but if you click on Edit and Special Characters, you will find it under Accented Latin. I keep the Special Characters window open all the time, along with the Find and Replace menu and half a dozen Inspector windows, each dedicated to a different aspect of what I am doing, so it is only a click away. I appreciate that this is a lot to put on a smaller screen, but it all fits clearly on a 27" monitor.

What language do you have your keyboard set to?

If it is British English, Australian English, English (which is USA English) then option u followed by a vowel will type the vowel with the umlaut.

eg option u then a, e, i, o, u = ä ë ï ö ü

There are several of these methods for various accented letters and are easy to remember because they are associated with the letters commonly used with those accents

eg option n then n = ñ
