Selected Movie Won't Play on Your Display!

I've purchased a new Mac Pro a few months before this problem arose, so the bug could be related to moving my files to the new (albeit currently authorized) computer, but I doubt it. I am suddenly unable to play my purchased movies (such as "UP" in HD) without a new monitor apparently.

I have an Apple Cinema Display, and also view my movies with AppleTV. These movies previously played on both without problem. Now, iTunes won't let me play the movie on either!!? I did recently re-download all purchases, and I think the newer movie versions are a part of this problem if not the most likely culprit. I am running iTunes 10.4.1 & OS 10.6.8 on a Mac Pro 12-core with a 27in Apple Cinema Display, AppleTV 2 and an Airport Extreme 802.11.n for my Wi-Fi.

I've tried restarting the computer, repairing permissions, adding the movie to a playlist, burning to data DVD and re-importing with no avail. Can someone please tell me how I can fix this?

I hope this is a bug, and not representative of the DRM policy at Apple. Who on EARTH would just go buy new HDTV and computer monitor to satisfy the DRM of Apple? This is either bad policy or a very bad bug. I hate to say this, but this is why people are justified in looking for apps that break DRM. If THIS doesn't qualify for fair use of material I've purchased, I don't know what does. Can I just play the media I've purchased on my "authorized" Apple devices?

Sorry for the rant mixed in with the question. Thanks to anyone who has suggestions that will help me here.

First off, thanks for the reply. I appreciate you offering some information.

To Apple: Wow. So what you're saying is the movies that we've purchased through iTunes and been watching just fine for years are now garbage and we should just go out and rebuy them as DVD's? OR, I should purchase all new displays? I don't really care who's responsible for the DRM technology. Apple should find a way to protect and grandfather-in customers who purchased before the HDCP was in place. I'm going to call customer support.

Crazy, huh?

Ok,

I found a way to remove the DRM from the movies I've purchased from iTunes. Unfortunately, this means they've kicked me back to DVD and I will steer well clear of digital movie purchases for a long time. Also, I'll have to advise others to do the same.

Realistically, the new version of iTunes or OSX (updates seem to be the problem as my laptop does not experience the same issue with these files) should have come with a large-print warning that I may be unable to view purchased movies if I installed the updates.

Some people will shout that it's my fault for not reading the fine print of these downloads, but if you think every consumer who might purchase from iTunes or other online media stores should read all fine print of every security download or other software update just to ensure large corporations don't use the fine print to steal content you've purchased, then you are; a) smoking something b) a lawyer c) a half-wit.

I do love Apple products, and will be the first to admit that I'll support them anytime the lines are gray (and am trying hard to support the new Final Cut Pro because I think it's going to be awesome for everyone), but this is pretty clear-cut, bad behavior.

It's probably great grounds for a class action lawsuit. I've certainly been invited to join successful lawsuits that were based on MUCH less.

I wish I could help others who have this issue, but for obvious reasons the best I can tell you is to go purchase the movies on DVD and avoid iTunes or other digital media vendors.

I should be ashamed of myself for reading all the complaints related to this DRM before contacting Apple. They are telling me this is NOT normal and are working on the problem. Even though I don't really need the solution now, I'll try to post for anyone else with this issue.

First thing they tried was powering down computer, unplugging ALL cables from it, unplugging cables from my monitor and powering it down as well. We left this for a couple of minutes and then plugged up & powered up. Now, the movies are playing on TV, but not my computer. They are discussing the matter and I will post when I find out more. Even if it only plays on TV now, I'll be happy.

I love my mac too much to stay mad long!

The next thing we tried was control (right) clicking the movie and looking for the "version" menu item. It wasn't there on my movie. This prompted me to remember that the movie itself is a backup of the original because I lost a hard drive not too long ago. The original does not show as a purchase, and therefore does not have that option.

What the representative suggested was to contact the Apple Store and request a re-download of the movie. This would allow playback on TV as well as standard def playback on my computer monitor via the "Version" selection.

So the bottom line; it was a bug.

I wish a moderator would help me remove my hot-tempered "correct answer" post so that people don't stop there and assume Apple was so sensless. Instead, it was just me. Anyone who wants to take a shot at me for representing every forum troll out there today should do so now. . .

As you are Level 2, you should be able to report your own post using the "Report Abuse" button. Don't be put off by the name. It's used for reporting posts for any reason, including that they've been posted in the wrong area. I've reported myself at least once. I just put a note in the comments explaining why I thought it should be removed and the Hosts were most obliging.

Glad you got your problem sorted out. 🙂
