what is taking up hard drive space?

hello.

I have a power mac (pre intel) quad core desktop running 10.5.8.

I have noticed it being very sluggish lately.

From taking 5 minutes to boot up, to browsers taking longer to launch(with the color wheel spinning longer until the browser is fully ready), to inputing text into fields in a browser window(the text gets entered a second or two after typing). Even when I open a finder window, the icons for every file, as well as the size listing of each file/folder will take like 10 seconds to start loading one at a time. I never noticed that before.

So I opened disk utility, and noticed that I have filled up 160GB out of the 233GB that this hard drive has. That seemed like a really high number.

So I added up the total size of the home folders in all 4 users on this computer, and they add up to 27GB. The system folder is 4 gigs, and the main Library folder at the top level is 51 gigs. I don't think there is anything left. That adds up to 82GBs. Where is the other 78GBs coming from?

I know I'm missing something, but I can't figure out what.

Even still, I don't know that this is the reason for my computer to act sluggish, but now I'm curious how I'm filling up so much hard drive space.

Any thoughts on finding this info out, and/or fixing the sluggish issue?

Thanks!!

PowerMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8), quad core

This computer does not want to start up in safe mode. Fans spin full speed forever, and so does the startup wheel. I waited 25 minutes.... had to force shut down

I've seen this a couple of times at least, whilst it could be anything, as I recall it turned out to be a bad Hard Drive on one. DU doesn't check everything. Another time it just took disconnecting an Ethernet cable!???

Hey Aqua, so I went to the AppleJack link that you gave me, and on that page I saw an ad for an app called MacKeeper. It said to use that before AppleJack. I didn't think twice about this not being legit since it was on the page that you refered me to, so I downloaded it and ran it. The app was a little confusing, because you can't tell if it's doing anything, but my bigger concern is that I looked up the instructions for this MacKeeper app and in my search i saw many posts about the app being a scam, with mentions of viruses.

Did I just screw up? (i only did the scan part. No actual repairs or trashing of files).

hmmm....ok. There was definitely no warning, or caveat as you called it, but even if there was, I don't know what Malware is anyway...lol. I think i just learned what it is. Malware is bad.... =)

I'm usually so aware of illegitimate adds, and i never click on them, but i totally had my guard down, being that i was refered to a trusted page. Totally my fault.

I will follow your uninstall instructions, but can you tell me what i may have done to my computer by downloading and running that app?

thank you all!I learned a lesson...

(Sorry Aqua, for ruining your good advice. I'm trying to correct my mistake with Ramon's help, and continue where I left off. And that was, running AppleJack...)

Yes, unfortunately you installed malicious software on your machine designed to search your computer for credit card or such other financial or banking information that would allow the author to rob you blind.

Yes, I went back in this thread and BDAqua does not have the caveat this time. Perhaps the last time that BDAqua visited that particular page it was not yet infected by the spurious ad.

Most unfortunate for you. 😟

ok, thank you Ramon!

the bad stuff (MacKeeper) is removed.

I quit MacKeeper from the activity monitor, and i trashed the app.

that's all the instructions said.

Now I think I will run AppleJack, as Limnos, and as BDAqua had originally suggested, and I WILL NOT be fooled into clicking on some dumb, fake link.

I will update soon.

thank you all!

I should add that after running OmniDiskSweeper, (since my initial problem was a REALLY sluggish computer with lots of beach ball delays.....and it's getting worse), it tells me that the biggest chunk of hard drive space is Applications(72.3GB), Library(52.9GB), and Users(23.2GB).

The biggest chunk within these 3 folders are Apple Loops(26.8GB), Garage Band app (13Gb), and Logic files(42.6GB)

(should I move apple loops, and logic files to an external...?)

The total space being used on my hard drive is 154.3GBs. The total capacity is 233.6GB.

Now, I'm not an experienced mac tech, but my limited knowledge tells me that this is no big deal.

I mean, I'm only using 66%.

I have almost 100GBs of space left.

Am I correct in thinking this?

Would it also be a safe assumption to think that the cause of my sluggishness is not because of how much hard drive space I'm taking up?

I thank you all for your continued input!!!!

(i'm off to use my AppleJack now....)

hey guys, i'm tryin to get apple jack to work.

I rebooted, and held down apple+s, and got the black screen, but it wasn't clear where to type 'applejack AUTO'

After the first 2 paragraphs of stuff i don't really understand, it then says:

If you want to make modifications to files:

/sbin/fsck -fy

/sbin/mount -uw /

If you wish to boot the system:

exit

For troubleshooting assistance, just type 'applejack' at the prompt

:/ root# s

And that is where it ends.

So I started typing, and it the word applejack as i typed it, ended up immediately after the letter "s", so that it looks like:

:/ root# sapplejack AUTO

but nothing happened, so I then hit "Return" and still nothing happened, and then i just had to force shut down of course, and I'm back at the same spot....

what do I do?

(i feel like i missed out on some kind of "introductory to mac computers" course somwhere along the line. =)

thank you!!

OK, let it set a bit then just hit Enter once or twicw, a prompt should show like a # sign or such... can't remember after only a few thousands times! 😉

Then just start typing & see if it shows up.

If you want to make modifications to files:

/sbin/fsck -fy

/sbin/mount -uw /

If you wish to boot the system:

exit

You should be able to type applejack AUTO at that point.

hmmm....ya know Aqua, I would do that, but it's been stuck on task #1 for the last 15 minutes without moving.

I started the same app on my lap top at the same time, and the whole process finished in 5 minutes or so.

But on this power mac which is having all the problems, it started applejack auto mode, and started with disk repair, but it never got past:

** /dev/rdisk0s3

** Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.

** Checking Extents Overflow file.

** Checking Catalog file.

And that's where it has been for the last .....15 minutes now.

I need to go to sleep. Got to be up in 6 hours.

This stinks because the fans are racing and they're kind of loud.

I would force shut down because it seems like it's frozen, but i want to give it a chance to continue just in case it's not actually frozen.

Well, we'll see what happens in the morning. Putting my ear plugs on...

=)
