Blu-Ray slot optical drive support?

I'm buiding my own external enclosure for slot-loading Blu-Ray and TB hard disk drive (both SATA). The interface will be FireWire 800 and e-SATA.

I presume that these drives have driver support in OS X (Snow Leopard and Lion)?

Thanks,

iX

In terms of just burning Blu-Ray data discs I do not believe you need any drivers or special software. You can pretty much also use any make/model of Blu-Ray burner to do this. However have a look at http://eshop.macsales.com/search/internal+blu+ray

If however you want to make and burn Blu-Ray movie discs then Toast from Roxio can make (very) simple Blu-Ray movie discs and incorporate your own HD video. See http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/toast/plugin/overview.html

In terms of playing back commercial Blu-Ray movies, then your options are limited. You can do this fully if you use Boot Camp to installed Windows 7 and a suitable application. Otherwise you can use http://www.macblurayplayer.com/ however this cannot play the proper Blu-Ray menu, what it does is automatically find what it believes is the main movie and jumps to and plays that. It claims it can properly play the full Dolby TrueHD audio track although Apple themselves do not support this.

I have an LG Bluray drive in a BYTECC enclosure

that has FW800/USB2.0/SATA interfaces. Obviously,

there is no SATA on the Mac but the FW800 and

USB2.0 work just fine. Also, there are no drivers

needed the chipsets support USB and FW800

Mass Storge Device protocols. I got mine

at Newegg.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E1681714506

The package can also accomodate 3.5 hard drives

up to 2 terrabyte.

And as for Blurays, you can watch them using

the Macgo software, although their multichannel

audio isn't quite there yet, the movies look great

played back on a 1080p display. There are other

means to get Bluray content playback, but they

can't be discussed here as the methods are

illegal in most civilized countries.
