Headphones play new mail sound upon plugging in

Mine is set to 'Selected sound output device", and I still have this issue (running 10.8 Mountain Lion)

Setup:

Macbook Retina with external apple 24" monitor with usb audio and analog audio connected.

With the monitors usb plugged in (monitor has usb audio speakers) and the audio output connected to external speakers, it happens when unplugging analog audio connection.

I believe the usb audio takes over and it sounds all of the past mail sounds in the order that they occured since it was plugged in. Not sure if the sounds are backlogged from when it was asleep or what is happening. Mail sounds seem to be functioning normally when everything is plugged in.

How can we get an Apple tech support on this?

We are all just saying the same thing over and over.

I'm going to quickly add a 'me too' to this discussion. Started occuring on new Macbook Pro 17" 2.4GHz Intel Core i7 running current version of of OSX Mountain Lion. I have none of the 'suspected culprits' in terms of connected speakers or Airfoil... Incredibly infuriating.

Same issue here (rMBP 10.8.1). Since this is happening across different computers, it definitely seems to indicate a software glitch. I presume 10.8.2 will address this.

I'm experiencing this as well on Mountain Lion. I've used every OS since leopard on my current mac and haven't had this problem before Mountain Lion. I'm very dissapointed in Apple that this hasn't been fixed.

I found out that mine was attempting to send sound output through USB (Display Audio) - once I switched it to "Internal Speakers - Built in" it has stopped doing this. So - System Preferences - Sound - Output - make sure Internal speakers is selected.

I'll just add a "me too" here as well. I first noticed this while showing my rMBP off to a staunch Windows user. I was commenting on Apple's attention to detail and the seamlessness of their hardware/software interraction. Then when I unplugged my muted headphones, I got 30 seconds of "whoosh, whoosh, boing, boing, whosh, boing."

After years of evangelizing Apple products with determination and perserverance, I have now been made a fool. It's perfectly reasonable that new software have some issues, but this was sometime in July! A month and a half later and no fix? Come on! This has got to be like 1 line of code: if(muted) { don't play sounds }

Ugh, I'm sorry... it's probably more complicated than that, but please, Apple, this is embarasing! I miss Steve...

Yeah, it's also so irritating/frustrating because it reminds me of the reasons I left Windows. It reminds me of the horrible suprise I used to get when logging in to WinXP with the volume up. There are bigger issues than this one, but it sounds like this has been happening for quite awhile across multiple OSs.

Checking in here with this problem. I have a Mid 2011 13inch i7 256GB MacBook Air.

I told a genius about this problem and wanted me to drop the computer off and have them send it in for 5-7 days. I said no it's fine, but I'm wondering if anyone else has done this and gotten it fixed? I will be doing this soon though because it's really starting to bother me and could be a result of a grander issue.

Same here on Macboock Air 13" Mid 2011. Definitely something with Mail as if I close Mail it stops immediately. Started happeingin after I upgraded to Mountain Lion but this thread started before its release.

This issue has been on since Lion on my macbook white. I got now a Mid 2011 iMac at home and another one at work. This same event happens in all three computers. I just noticed when I plug in the headphones, the Sound preferences "Play sound effects through" had no option selected. I changed it to "headphones" and lets see how it reacts until next time. It surely sounds like the system keeps a backlog of sounds for emails sent or received, however seems to me it's accross all computers the same amount of sound effects on different occasions - sounds like mail sending and mail receiving (maybe I'm wrong) .

Yup, happens to me too. 15-inch 2008 (I think) Macbook Pro running Lion 10.7.5. It only happens for Mail send and receive alerts and the play repeatedly when remove headphones to use the internal speakers. Restarting Mail stops this.
