Whenever I plug in or unplug my headphones, my computer plays the new mail sound repeatedly, presumably for each email I have recieved since last plugging/unplugging them. It also plays the sent mail sound if I happened to send any emails in that time period. This only started happening after installing Lion, and searching I have done has yielded no results. Anyone else have this issue and know how to fix it?

who's the "most of us" you're talking about? Any problem now with a mac has to go to Lion support? This makes no sense. Lion is simply Apple's latest system, and problems with the system should be under that problem's tag, and not under Lion.

I am also having the same problem (MacBook/Lion). I have not found a thread elsewhere that addresses this, including Lion support. Anyone have any ideas or can direct me where to find where this is posted?
It doesn't have to go to the Lion forum. But posting the question in there as well as the MacBook forum will increase the chances of getting an answer.

i have the same or similar problem, iam really not sure about this - sounds stupid but it feels more like it plays the same "melody" when i plugin the headphones after some time (hours/days). like 4 times "new mail" 2 times "sent mail" + 1 "new mail". Very strange. I can not reproduce the sounds by unpluggin and pluggin the headphones again even if i get or send mails in between.

Tony--do you use an external USB audio device (like speakers)? And/Or use Airfoil software from Rogue Amoeba? Based on my reading of other threads I think it could be due to one of these items...
No, I don't have either of those two things. I have a 2011 MBA, with the sound usually muted on the speakers. I get all the queued up Mail sounds when I plug in my headphones. I don't have any other audio software or devices running.
Try going into System Preferences->Sound, and then on the first tab named "Sound Effects", towards the bottom is a "Play sound effects through:". Make sure that is set to "Selected sound output device"
If it's set to headphones, then it appears all the sounds just get queued up to a virtual device, as noted above.
Same thing happens here. OS is Moutain lion.
