Unable to get printer server status ( server-error-operation-not-supported)

ARGHHHH!!!!!!!!!

If anyone can help with this i would be truly gratefull!!!!

I am very new to MACs and have just purchased a Mac Mini to test the waters etc.

I have a small (2PC 1 laptop ) network at home all connected to a Linksys WRT54G 4 port +wireless router. All connect to the internet through this and can file/printer share through the router as well.

I have connected the Mini to the router and can file share and connect to the web as well with no problems ( a few at first lol ).

Problem now is i have aquired an HP 2500CM printer which is a great machine with built in network card. After a lot of faffing about i have manage to connect it to a RJ45 socket on the Router and can print to it using its' IP address on the network from the XP Home PCs.

I can ping the printer from the Mac Mini and it is detected as a generic PS Printer but i cannot print to the !*!!*! thing.

I get the following message in the print status window / box / whatever you want to call it in Apple terms!

UNABLE TO GET PRINTER SERVER STATUS ( Server-Error-Operation-Not-Supported ) !

Can anyone help with a dummies guide to getting this thing running before i rip out whats left of the thinning hair!!!

Best Rgds

Thanks for the fast reply Greg but i am still at a bit of a loss. I understand what you mean by protocols etc but not where or what they do or go on the Mac Mini setup.
I would have thought pinging the printer says its "there" on the network so setting it up or adding it as a printer should be fairly straight forward. I can't recall seeing an option for protocol in setting it up on the Mini. Any other thoughts or suggestions.
Forgive the numbness of the XP Brain!!!
