I have bought a new macbook air .
I have an old - not so old - Panasonic NV GS60 DV camera and want to capture the movies into imovie.
I connect the camera to macbook air whit an ordinary usb cable, but my mac cannot see the camera.
what do I have to do?

For a DV camera, you must have a Firewire connection. Unfortunately, the MacBook Air does not have a firewire connection.
The inexpensive option would be to capture the footage on another Mac that does have firewire. Once you have the DV captured on a hard drive, you can attach it to your MBA and edit it using USB. Or you could put it on your MBA internal drive or SSD, but be aware that DV files are very large.
The more expensive, but elegant, option would be to look at the Apple 27" Thunderbolt Display. This display should attach to a new MBA through the Thunderbolt port. This will give you, among other things, a Firewire 800 port. YOu would need a9 pin to 4 pin Firewire Cable to attach the DV camera to the Display.

It should have a firewire port. It may be called DV Out or iEEE1394.
I looked at the specs for the camera and it seems it doesn't have a Firewire connection.
To the original poster: Does QuickTime Player 10.1 see the camera?
Thank you for your helpfull answer. I will look for the tunderbolt display and try that way, or maybe I will rent a mac with a firewire port. The Camera have a firewire port also.

I havnt tried it yet, but I will, soon.
If Quicktime player see the camera, then there may be another way around.
