The iOS version of Apple's Pages will open Word documents on an iPad. Purchase it from the iTunes app store. There are a number of other apps that can open them as well. They, too, can be found at the iTunes app store.

There is no Finder or equivalent, you don't import anything directly into the iPad. It will always be carried or ported in by some app (Mail, DropBox, Evernote, Pages, whatever) or be transferred in using the file transfer function in iTunes.

One you have it on the iPad any number of apps or readers will able to open/view it, a smaller number to edit it.

Many apps will open Word documents. I like GoodReader. Wih Good reader you can sync it to your iPod via file sharing, imprt from email attachment, download from DropBox.
