Intermittent Kernel panics

For the past couple of days, I've been experiencing kernel panics intermittently. No kps before that, ever.

Thinking that maybe my RAM chips are going bad, I'd run "Rember" to test RAM chips but Rember makes my Macbook Pro run at up to 186 degrees F and those temp levels for the many hours it takes to do a complete RAM test would put a lot of stress on my MBP, and heat is the nemesis of a Macs guts, no?

The KP report follows; could someone interpret it? What might be the reason for the kps?

I'd run "Rember" to test RAM chips but Rember makes my Macbook Pro run at up to 186 degrees F and those temp levels for the many hours it takes to do a complete RAM test would put a lot of stress on my MBP, and heat is the nemesis of a Macs guts, no?

Oh yes, that's tough on Computers, but "normal" for an Intel Mac under load...

Need a bit more info from the log, like what is running at 0x00199b26.

How to read Crash Logs...

BTW, I see your running Espionage, be sure to remove it & get all your info out of it before you ever move to Lion... if you ever do. The Installer/Uninstaller is PPC code & will not run in 10.7, & 10.7 really punishes you to try to get rid of it as it errors out about every second the Mac is running. 😉

The high temps under load may be considered "normal' for an Intel MBP but definitely NOT healthy for it; I've already had two logic boards replaced under warranty(one right after another) and logic boards are a weak point... fairly high failure rates. No doubt heat is a big factor.

Running at 180-186 F for 5-6 or so hours(the length of time for Rember to scan 4GBs) would be rather brutal.

My MBP is a 2008 model and its extended Applecare warranty is about to expire.

I'm afraid that I can't help you out there....How would I find out what's running at 0×00199b26?

I won't be moving up to Lion till it's well matured and bugs are worked out of it.

I'm gonna try OS 10.6+ but I'd guess if the kps are bad RAM caused I'll still be

experiencing kps.

Sep 23, 2011 3:10 PM in response to iskander1

This is your main culprit. I'd uninstall it and see if the KPs stop

com.ab.kext.webfilternke

If uninstalling that doesn't help, then on to

com.taoeffect.ispy.kext 2.0.1

com.sophos.kext.sav 7.3.0

com.globaldelight.driver.BoomDevice 1.1

com.usboverdrive.driver.hid 3.0.1

You can temporarily uninstall them, one by one, using this command in Terminal in Applications>Utilities. That way you won't actually have to uninstall the entire program. You will need to find the exact name of the .kext by navigating to /System/Library/Extensions.

sudo kextunload path to file.kext/

To reload

sudo kextload path to file.kext/

Here is an example.

sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/PaceSupportFamily.kext/

Hit return. If you have never used the sudo command, you will get a warning. Then enter your admin password, which you won't see typed on the screen and hit return. Wait for the $ sign prompt to reappear, which will indicate the extension has been unloaded/loaded. Then just close the window.

I can find no com.ab.kext.webfilternke in System/Library/extensions or anywhere else. I 've used both Find Any File and EasyFind but neither came up with anything. I am now clueless. Dunno where to go from here.

Maybe I'm missing something?

Also, ya need to know that I'm pretty weak and phobic in/about terminal protocol/usage.

Understanding crash logs isn’t easy and it’s hard (sometimes impossible) to decipher the cause of the problem. Take a look at Apple’s Crash Reporter

document at http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn2004/tn2123.html Also look at Tutorial: An introduction to reading Mac OS X crash reports

http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20060309075929717

Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem – frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device. What external devices do you have connected? When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices onyour laptop. Do you experience the same problems?

Do you have an Apple Hardware Test disc (the AHT is on the Install/Restore DVD that came with your Mac)? Running the Apple Hardware Test in Loop Mode is an excellent troubleshooting step for finding intermittent hardware problems. It is especially useful when troubleshooting intermittent kernel panics. If Loop Mode is supported by the version of the Apple Hardware Test you are using, you run the Extended Test in Loop Mode by pressing Control-L before starting the test. Looping On should appear in the right window. Then click the Extended Test button. The test will run continuously until a problem is found. If a problem is found, the test will cease to loop, indicating the problem it found. If the test fails, be sure to write down the exact message associated with the failure. In some cases, RAM problems did not show up until nearly 40 loops, so give it a good run.

 Cheers, Tom 😉

Other places to look...

Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed. Also look in System Preferences' Other row.

Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

/private/var/run/StartupItems

/Library/StartupItems

/System/Library/StartupItems

/System/Library/LaunchDaemons

This is very weird. Googling "webfilternke," the only hit I get is coming from this thread. Nothing else. Do you have any program using the words "webfilter" or "web filter?" Anything in EasyFind for those or "com.ab" alone?

Sep 24, 2011 5:47 AM in response to WZZZ

Well, looks like I resolved the KP issue.(fingers crossed!) I searched for "webfilter" and "com.ab" and came up with an assortment of files including "webfilternke".

Interesting that searching for Webfilternke directly using EasyFind and Find Any File resulted in no hits but using webfilter as the operant word yielded webfilternke in the resulting list of files.

So I now appear to be KP free.

If they do reappear I'll then run the Apple Hardware Test.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions.
