Why does my iPhone duplicate pictures that I have syncronised into a folder on the gallery called Photo Library?

Hi all,

My iPhone has been doing this for a bit now, when I syncronise the phone, all pictures I have taken, and all pictures I have syncronised are added to another folder on the phone called "Photo Library". I cannot find this folder on my iTunes to deselect it, and I have no idea where it has came from or how to stop it. Any advice would be appreciated

iPhone 4, iOS 4

You can't delete the Photo Library or alter it. The iPhone organizes photos the same way that iPhoto does on a Mac. All photos synced to your phone appear in the "Photo Library". The various folders/albums merely contain pointers to the actual photos, which are stored in the Photo Library. They are not duplicated.

This is not true, and I am now having the same problem. Going all the way back to the original iPhone, I have always had one folder created in iPhoto that I selected to sync with my iPhone. That gave me 2 total libraries on iPhone that I've had with each phone/software update; "Camera Roll" and the one I created "iPod/iPhone." Those were always the only two on there. Now, with the 5.0 update, the 79 photos that were in the synced iPhoto library called "iPod/iPhone" are duplicated in a 3rd folder called "Photo Library." This was never there and it is an exact duplicate of the folder I created as it contains the same amount of photos (79) and they are the exact same photos. This has just occured with the new update, so something changed. I'm now trying to figure out how to get rid of that folder as it does not appear in iPhoto as a synced folder and it is clearly a duplicate of the one I do want to keep, the one I've always had.

I have the same problem. It started when I bought an iPhone 4S and upgraded from my old 3GS. Now I have three albums on my iPhone: Camera Roll, Photo Library, and iPhone Sync (a folder on my PC that I sync to my iPhone). Photo Library and iPhone Sync have the same photos in it. I've tried to figure out how to delete "Photo Library", but haven't figured out how. It seems like some bug in the upgrade created and maintains a duplicate of my original album. It's not the end of the world, but it's annoying.

Update: In case anyone has thought of turning off all photo syncing and then re-syncing to try to get rid of it, it doesn't work. The Photo Library album is just recreated.

Update 2: While I would disagree with WJosten (earlier post above) that the mystery album has always been there, I agree with what he said about it soring all your synced pictures there. To test, I added another synced folder and all of the pictures from my 2 synced folders are also in the Photo Album folder. I have no idea why Apple would display a "master photo folder" and not give an option to hide it. I'm guessing it's an "undocumented feature". haha
