os x lion external drive deleting files does not free space, os x lion external drive deleting files does not free space

I have a four year old imac with Lion installed. I have deleted several large movie files on my external hard disc (approx. 200 gb). The hard disc continues to show the same space available on the disc as was available before I deleted the file. I looked for the usage of the space at apple icon- About this Mac- More Info- Storage- shows huge space occupied as "Other". How can I recover it?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.7)

Not to be rude or such, but did you empty the Trash? You need to do that with the external drive connected and mounted.

Thanks for such a prompt response. Yes, I have emptied Trash. Moreover, even when I move files from external hard disc to mac disc, it does not increase available space on the external drive.

Have you tried restarting the iMac and external drive? On my iMac, the free space isnt seen till I restart.
