what are .nib and .iproj files?

I 've found that when i select 'show package' contents on network.prefpane in prefpanes, its full of weird folders and files, with extensions i've never seen. The two most common were .iproj and .nib

Are these common, and should they be there?

Yes, they're common and are essential parts of most applications. A ".nib" file is a user interface file created by Interface Builder. ("NIB" stands for NeXT Interface Builder. NeXT is the company Apple acquired, and which much of OS X is based off of). It contains an archive that represents the arrangement of windows, buttons, etc. that an application uses while it's running. An ".lproj" folder is a language project folder that contains the localized resources that the application uses while running.

Hope this helps.....

Daniel,

From Apple Developer Connection: A nib file is an archive of objects and connections created in Interface Builder.

.lporj = language support files, see this MacFixit discussion thread.

Edit: while I am researching, the real guru's like Mark are answering the question.
