Visual artifacts with IMovie11 after moving to Lion

Hi, I have recently moved to Lion and created a new IMovie11 project, but now the project videos are complete with visual artifacts ( vertical lines ) they are also shown in the exported movie:

I haven't experienced this before as I did few movies with IMovie and it worked well.

The initial video is shot with Canon 5D Mark II at 1080p 25fps, the project is also set to 25 fps:

Any help, thanks.

Btw Morpheus1978 this is exactly the same issue I am experiencing, didn't had any problems before I moved to Lion (and I have made few videos with iMovie using the same process)

I am also in the same boat.

I tried to clear the cache, fixing the disk for errors, nothing seems to help. I guess this is a compression artifacts with iMovie (because it only happens with iMovie).

I did had some success when exporting movie with 720p, don't know if I was lucky that time, but I didn't see any issues, once I tried 1080p then it got screwed.

I'm experiancing the exact same problem.

I've been looking beyond the support forums for answers and have found that others with similar issues are returning to Snow Leopard and the problem seems to go away.

I'll give it a go and let you know how it works outt.

By the way, if anyone were to hazard a guess, does the issue lie with Lion or iMovie 11?

Has anyone come accross this problem using Final Cut Pro X?

Hello,

now it's getting even worse. I get the artifacts not only in iMovie but also in Windows Vista running in a Virtual Box (Parallels Desktop).

It seems that everybody is just reporting his bug but there is no one solving the problems. And I though Apple might have a better support than Windows.
The guys in the apple store have no idea. They answered me: "Please wait for the next update". How long should I wait. I'd like to finish my video now and not next summer!

Sorry, but I'm a bit frustated about the bad Apple support.

Ok. Here's an update: Moving back to Snow Leopard eleimnated the problem, so it's definatley an issue with Lion and not iMovie.

Interestingly enough, the problem occured only on my MacBook Pro.

My 13" macbook did NOT have this problem.

Yep - Two machines running Lion and iMovie 11 - one with these glitchy artifacts, one running perfectly. WEIRD.

On a side note, downgrading from Lion to Snowleopard is a pain in the arse.

Luckely I was able to restore from a time machine backup.

Doctor Stu., Excellent Troubleshooting, and thanks for posting this back to the group. When you go to the Apple Menu > About this Mac > Click on More Info... What does your Graphics/Display record report itself as? Is it nVidia or AMD/ATI Radeon graphics? Or is it Intel 2000/3000 embedded graphics? Sounds to me it's a driver software glitch and Apple could resolve this if the created a newer release of the graphics chip support software.

Here's the specs for the MBP.

I'll have to wait till I get home to post details on the macbook.

Cheers everyone.

Now that has me thinking about Graphics Display mode and the switching that might occur to save power. Does anyone know which chip is being used when they are rendering out the final version of their movie? Meaning, are you plugged into the Wall outlet? And under Energy Saver settings in System Preferences do you have this setting unchecked?

"automatic changing of video modes"

Also do you have an external monitor connected to the graphics port? Try disconnecting the external monitor, again to force the Mac to use just one of the graphics chips at a time.

It may be iMovie is using the Intel Chip or vice versa and maybe forcing it to use the other video chip is necessary? I don't know it's just a wild guess based on everyone having Intel embedded graphics AND the same exact nVidia GT 330M.

Oct 24, 2011 12:56 PM in response to elikness

I like the way you think, but the problem doesnt just manifest during the final render. The same artiacts would appear RANDOMLY in iMovie whilst putting the movie together. That is, you could play your footage in iMovie and see an artifact but the replay the same footage and it wouldn't be there. So whatever is causing the glitch in the final render also impacts on watching and editing footage in iMovie.

Let's keep putting our heads together on this one.
