how to replace downward arrow on downloads folder in dock

I accidentally put this folder into trash. Retrieved it simply enough with click and drag, but the folder has now lost its downward arrow icon. Any way of getting it back?

The same thing has happened to my documents folder

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.1)

Right click on one of the stacks. Choose "display as folder" and "View content as Fan". Do the same for the Documents Stack. You now have the icon with the down arrow on the dock for the Downloads Stack and the folder icon with the paper symbol for the Documents Stack.

Delete the one that's currently on the dock my dragging it off and letting go. Open a new Finder window, click on your Home folder (picture of House) and to the right is the Downloads folder. Drag it to the Dock (to the right of the dotted line - making sure you don't plop it in the trash), et voila!

Same procedure for the Documents folder.

No, sorry, I am clearly not explaining the problem properly! The imac comes with three pre-made stacks - applications, downloads and documents. The applications stack has an A on it, the downloads stack has a downward arrow, and the documents stack has a folder icon on it. The applications A is still there, but the other two icons have disappeared. The stacks appear as two plain folders., with no icons on them. When you open each stack, they behave perfectly - it is just the icons that are missing. The downloads folder in the HD clearly has the arrow, but when I drag it to the dock, the arrow disappears

Hope that is clear

Mmmm, strange. Running out of ideas here. If you haven't done so already, you could try 'repair disk permissions'. Utilities>Disk Utility, select Macintosh HD on the left and click on 'repair disk permissions'.

Maybe worth a restart after.

If that has no effect you could download OnyX:

http://www.titanium.free.fr/download.php?sid=d402da0b8a43528a33b7f17b3da9107e (select the correct version for your OS) and run that using the 'automation' option. OnyX requires a restart after running its routines.

One other possibllity would be to chuck the Dock preferences file, restart and let the system create a new preferences file. It'll take the Dock to it's out-of-the-box state and you'd need to re-add anything that's there now, but perhaps it would re-instate the icons.

In Finder hold down the 'option' key and from the 'Go' menu select Library>Preferences. Drag this file to the desktop (if this works you can throw it away):

com.apple.dock.plist

and then restart.

No, it won't delete anything, it'll just restore the dock to it's basic state (I've just tested it on my Mac).

Hopefully you'll be able to drag whatever apps/folders you want to the new 'basic' dock and it'll display the icons properly. Applications/Downloads/Documents should reside to the right of the dotted line before the trash icon.
