HDMI to Thunderbolt *IN* (PS3)

HDMI to ThunderBolt is not likely to ever happen.

I just got the MC814 and bought an iWant HDMI to Thunderbolt cable adaptor but can't get my PS3 to connect so I can use it as a screen.

So the cable is out there but the iMac won't detect the input from the PS3.

Any thoughts?

Do you have a link to this adapter? A web search under this name comes up with nothing.

Target Display Mode, which allows you to use the iMac's display, works only with another Thunderbolt-equipped device. An adapter designed to connect an HDMI display to a Thunderbolt port, the only sort of adapter I've seen shipping, will not work. If the adapter you have claims to allow such a connection, please post a URL to the manufacturer's site so we can look into it.

That was my first thought, he is expacting a TB/m-DP to HDMI adapter to work in the wrong direction.

When I bought the Mac from PC world the salesman told me this would work and that I could use the Mac as a display for my PS3.

The salesman at PC World was wrong. That adapter is to connect an HDMI display to a computer with a mini-DisplayPort. It will not work to input the signal from an HDMI-equipped device such as a PS3 into your iMac.

Thanks for clearing that up Dave, I am dissapointed that it doesn't work but as the data transfer works both ways it seems like it is just a software issue to me, hopefully Apple will address this in the future.
