Getting buttons on a Microsoft Comfort 3000 working

I have a Mac Pro with a Microsoft Comfort Optical Mouse 3000 connected to it. When I was running Snow Leopard I had no problems with the mouse whatsoever - the left button would select & launch things on a double click. The right button would display a context menu, etc. Ever since installing Lion I've been unable to get anything other than the left button to work. The only way I can get a context menu is to use Ctrl+click, which I find extremely annoying. I've tried downloading & installing the latest drivers for this mouse from Microsoft but that hasn't helped. How can I go about getting the mouse functioning properly again?

I don't know of a "list" - you might want to peruse the Apple store - speaking of Apple, how about a magic trackpad instead of a mouse? Just a thought. It depends on the third party mfr. to make rodents that will have all their bells and whistles work with Mac OS, so just checking the web with a search phrase such as "mac os compatible mouse" should produce some Logitech and some others.

Well that's not very helpful. Microsoft claims that this mouse is compatible but it apparently isn't. How am I supposed to pick a mouse from Logitech or anywhere else and trust that it will be compatible? The last thing I want to do is go buy a mouse, try it, return it, and repeat the process until I find one that actually works.

And no, I'm not going to get a trackpad or any other "rodents" from Apple either. I really am not at all impressed with Apples designs when it comes to keyboards, mice, etc. I've had problems with carpal tunnel in the past and I've found that Microsofts ergonomic keyboards & mice are much more comfortable and useful when I'm working. When it comes to ergonomics Apple just doesn't cut it.

Frankly I'm just about ready to wipe my Mac and re-install Snow Leopard given other issues I've had with Lion (not just my mouse no longer working properly) and my dislike of some of the new "features". I have the same Mac Pro setup at home & at work and I'm still running Snow Leopard there, and I've found I much prefer Snow Leopard to Lion. At least I won't have to go waste any money on new mice to replace what used to work perfectly fine...

I'm trying to be helpful, but you do need to do some research yourself. Checking out models and their compatibility/system requirements will tell you if they'd be compatible. I suggested the Apple store - they list many non-Apple brands/models:

The new magic trackpad is about as ergonomic as you can get. I got one because I have a problem with mice myself - as far as mice are concerned, the only ones that don't hurt my hand are from Macally.

And here is the Logitech site for mice with a search for Mac:

Good luck.
