Constant KPs in New MacPro Pointing to RAID Card

Good morning,

Facing a bit of a vexing issue and thought I would see if anyone else out there is seeing the same thing.

I have 2 new Mac Pros, fresh out of the box running the latest Lion public build (10.7.1) and they're both KPing at random intervals. The logs seem to point to the RAID driver as the culprit, but doing a complete wipe and erase on the system seems to do nothing to resolve the matter. Part of me thinks this is because we're having to restore from the App Store rather than a dedicated system disk for the unit which would have the drivers - but that sounds paranoid. Surely Apple would have the needed drivers and various firmware download as part of the reinstallation process?

Curiously, these crashes occur even when the system is not accessing the RAID or writing to it.

At any rate, here is the latest crash log. If anyone has any thoughts or suggestions, I'd appreciate it.

Hi,

I've had exactly the same issue. Whenever my Macpro is doing lots of computations it will crash, even when I am neither reading nor writing to/from the internal RAID drive. What were you doing when they crashed? I did a hardware test and it is not hardware related. I am still waiting for Applecare people to retunr my calls...

This is the latest crash report.

Ah, I would never have recommended Apple RAID card.

Nor would I run Lion. 10.6.8 runs fine.

By default you would be booting 64-bit kernel and need 64-bit clean drivers, apps and plug-ins. That may be asking too much too soon.

Try 32-bit mode.

'
Clone Lion.

Put 10.6.8 on one of your drives.

Blue-Ray in there?

USB devices are full of possibiliites also. cables, drivers and devices and weak hub support.

Try w/o anything connected.

To test, try with a clean system.

You do have 10.6.x DVDs etc handy, right?

Try w/o the RAID card and see how long it stays up and stable.

File I/O errors? if you boot into Recovery and run Disk First Aid do you have errors? of course that would mean Lion Recovery has drivers. Forget using that, use your clone instead.

Apple RAID card firmware (and OS driver support) - have yet to hear support for 3TB drives and that has been a known issue for a year.

Hi Hatter,

thanks for the suggestions...

This is a new MP, which is why it has Lion. Otherwise I wouldn't have installed it. This means I do not have a Leopard version and everything was freshly installed. The main problem is that since it is a university computer it is the IT guys who set most things up. For now I do not have a Leopard installer, and I really do not want to return the computer to the IT dept...they take a long time.

Can one downgrade from Lion to Leopard?

I have done some testing on the machine and the issue is completely unclear to me. I was processing GIS data (large 2-3GB files) using ArcGIS on Parallels. After turning time machine on and using a non-RAID drive for TM, the first crash occured. I turned TM off and tried again. New crash. Since I was reading data from an external USB-RAID drive and writing to the internal RAID drive through Parallels, I thought that might be the cause. Moved to using Python GIS on Mac directly, reading from external USB-RAID and writing to internal RAID...crash. Tried reading from external USB RAID and writing in internal non-RAID...crash. Moved data to internal non-RAID, so that I could read and write to the same non-RAID disk...crash. In every case it will work for the first 5-10 minutes and then crash. Strangely in all the cases it gives the exact same crash report (?!).

As long as the computer is not doing many computations, it seems it doesn't have problems...I can work for days/hours compiling huge latex files with figures, using statistics packages, etc....no problem. Even moving files to the RAID or from the RAID does not always cause a crash. Only if at the same time I am doing something else. I also had a couple of crashes where the report was kernel panic, not RAID panic.

It's a Mid-2010 Mac Pro model, new

And yes it can run SNOW Leopard.

10.6.3 DVD $30

hard disk drive $80?

Apple sells a thumb drive with 10.6.8 and Lion too for $69.

But it isn't YOUR computer and you should have someone pick it up and give you a replacement spare or whatever, if they really are an IT dept. Heck, they should have tested it etc before deploying.

One new piece of information. Today after moving some of the data from my external RAID drive and unplugging it, MP stopped crashing. So it seems, for some reason, even if I am not using it, the external USB RAID drive seems to be the culprit. I guess now I'll have to move my data somehow and then not use the external RAID enclosure...which *****!

I solved most of the problems I was having...In my case the issue was being caused by a memory leak generated by certain Python packages (GDAL). So I used the "purge" command to clean up the memory and that way the computer stopped crashing (for the most part). Now I've had an issue that if I leave the computer on overnight, once in a while it freezes and I cannot get rid of the screen saver, so I have to rrestart it. But that is already a minor issue compared t what was going on at first. Interestingly, it still says it crashed because pf RAID issues.
