External DVD Drive - Software

I recently received a Sony 8.5 DVD dual layer burner. The software that came with it is for Windows. My computer came with OS 9.2 and a test version of OS X. I have now upgraded to Panther but iDVD doesn't work in Classic mode. I have also recenetly received Tiger. My DVD burner works, however I cannot play any movies...what kind of software do I need to be able to watch movies on my machine? I haven't installed Tiger yet because I am waiting for the CD version because the install doesn't work on an external DVD drive...

Move the Sony drive from the external casing to replace the one inside your Mac. Very eaasy to do... see Apple's Install It Yourself pages for your model QS...

You can then install Tiger from the DVD, which will install DVD Player; if you install from a CD drive, DVD Player will not install.

You will need to buy iLife '05 or '06 to get a version iDVD that will work w/Panther or Tiger.

complete your mac profile with the processor info., it makes a difference.

...I installed Panther off of CDs...is that why DVD Player 4 didn't install?...

Yes, the installer is hardware-sensitive (no internal DVD drive, no DVD Player installation).

...Is there a way to download DVD Player for Panther or Tiger, without having to move the drive into my machine?...

Apple DVD Player expects an internal DVD drive. It won't recognize an external DVD drive unless you also have an internal one.
You might try VLC for DVD playback on your external drive.

Hi

The alternative to David's suggestion is to use PACIFIST (shareware, search versiontracker.com) to extract & install DVD Player.app, then use DVD Player patch to allow it to work with an external DVD drive (by default DVD Player only runs on an external if an internal DVD drive is present).

Pacifist for Panther DVD PLayer.app directions:

1)With the OS Install disc 1 in your mac, open Pacifist.

2)Select "Open Mac OS X Install Packages" and Pacifist will load the packages folder on the discs (you'll have to feed it all three discs).

3)Select the arrowhead "Contents of EssentialSystemSoftware.mpkg"

4)select the arrowhead "Contents of Essentials.mpkg"

5) Select the arrowhead in front of the Applications folder

6)Select "DVD Player.app"

7)Select "Install" from Pacifist menu

8)Enter your password at the prompt
you're good to go.

Tiger may not be indentical, I've not tried it.
