I am trying to download E-Book management software (Calibre) on to my IPAD but Safari says download failed as Safari cannot download this file. Why is this. I would have thought this was a fairly straight forward procedure?

You can only download iOS apps from the App store. Isn't Calibre a Mac OS app?
Safari for the iPad cannot download anything. Use your computer to download it.
Also, Calibre will not run on your iPad. Only apps written for the iOS and downloaded from the iTunes App Store will run on your iPad.
You use calbre to put the e books on your mac, then you can sync them to the pad.
I had-have the same problem I am new to the iPad and have it on my windows when you go to own load there is a choice to download a IOS version and Safari still won't allow ??!! Any help is appreciated
If you are talking about Calibre, there is no iOS version. There's an OSX version for Mac computers which are not the same as iPads. Any and all software that can run on the iPad can only be installed from the App Store.
You cannot download anything thorugh Safari and try to install it, it just doesn't work that way.
Addiionally as has been already been pointed out Calibre installs on your Computer, not the iPad. You manage ebooks on the Computer.
