Q: Finder shows strange letter and number strings, programs "quit unexpectedly"

A couple of things have been happening. My finder, on right click, shows strange strings of letters and numbers in place of the words that used to be there. For instance, "Open in" now says "N152." (see link: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/lofiversion/index.php/t85009.html)

Also, some programs are saying they "quit unexpectedly" when I try to launch them. Excel and My profile reminder for my eye1display2 are the two I have seen do this so far.

Do you have any ideas about what happened and how to fix it?

I have a Macbook Pro, Mac OS X 10.6.8.

Thank you so much!

Kristen

Well, this is no good. I'm trying to boot from my Snow Leopard disk to erase and restore from backup and my machine won't boot from the disk. I hold down the 'c' key, but it boots to my main user account. I'm using an external keyboard, but that shouldn't matter, should it? (My original keyboard got destroyed a couple years ago).

Any suggestions? Haven't found much on the web.

Try using System Preferences->Startup Disk pane to select the SL disk as boot.  I am assuming the disk shows up on your desktop when you insert it, so it's likely not an issue with the disk being smudged / scratched or drive issue.

Is the keyboard wired or BlueTooth? There was a time when the BlueTooth extension didn't load early enough to recognize the keyboard before looking for the boot drive, but I thought they fixed that.

Thanks for the System Prefs idea. Didn't know I could do that.

Yes, the disk shows up on my desktop. I'm using an Apple USB external keyboard.

Would having an external drive connected throw it off perhaps?

Well, I erased my drive and did the restore from Time Machine (took about 10 hours). When it was finished restoring it alerted me as such and had the drop down with 'Restart' button. I clicked it, it booted up to the Apple screen and I watched the dial spin for 15 minutes. I then shut it down, walked my dog, came back and started it up again. It's now been hung up on that screen for the past 10 minutes and doesn't appear to be going anywhere.

    Thoughts?

Boot into safe mode? Hold the shift key down at reboot for a minut or so.

I've been trying everything. Tried to boot into Safe Mode. No go. Just like with booting from the install DVD, it doesn't seem to respond to keyboard commands when I'm trying to start up. Is there some reason the built-in keyboard has to be used for these kinds of things on a MacBook, perhaps? If so,  screwed. My built-in keyboard got ruined and isn't even on the laptop anymore.

Tried SMC reset as well. Didn't help. Unplugged all other devices. Not sure what to do.

This one is for excel. Safari has crashed also, but I did the install and it seems more stable now. I will post a crash if it does, but the crashlog is empty.

Don't see anything in any of these. Follow this https://discussions.apple.com/message/17650093#17650093 to see if any clues come up.

I'm having the same problem - random numbers appear in finder drop down and right-click menus. My programs aren't quitting unexpectedly though. I could not locate any of the 5 files except for the invisible one.

I'm a complete failure when it comes to this sort of stuff so any help would be much appreciated

*EDIT* Ohhppp I spoke too soon. Restarted twice and it's fixed. Thanks for all the help ^_^

Unfortunately, you have disabled the symptoms, but most of the Trojan remains installed. We are just starting to learn where they put the rest of the items and I'm sure your computer has been registered as infected with the malware developer, but I have no idea what else it might have done to your computer. It has likely inserted code into some of your applications (e.g. Safari), disabled Apple and other AV systems, and who knows what else. The only sure way to eliminate this threat as of right now is to reformat your drive, reinstall OS X and restore only your personal data from backup.

Just a few questions before I reformat and reinstall OS X.

If I have any photos/documents/mp3 files that are not backed up, does this mean I can't transfer these to an external hard drive from the infected computer and transfer them back after?

Can you please explain to me what actually happens as a result of this trojan?

    Thank you again

No guarantees, but I don't think it would infect any personal files as it has been tucking things away in places that exist for all users, so you should be OK for now.

Again, not with any certainty. All we seem to know for certain about the new strain comes from this short article from Intego. From that I gather that it still does the same thing, install a backdoor for future exploitation use and reports to the mother ship that it has successfully infected your Mac with information that positively identifies your machine and userID. We have no idea what their next move might be.

If you have any clues as to how you were infected, that remains a mystery. Earlier versions relied on convincing users that their FlashPlayer needed to be updated to view a web page, but none of the users infected by this version can recall doing that in the past week or so. It would have involved clicking on something to launch the Java applet, but we don't know what that web site might have been predending to market.
