Rod dots on the screen

I have a brand new iMac 27" 3,4 GHz Intel Core i7 with 16 GB RAM and AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2048 MB. I have two 23" Cinema Display connected via two Displayport/Thunderbolt ports.

I have discovered small red dots fluidly appearing on the screen (only visible on dark background). They come and go and apperas in a repeating linear pattern.

What might be the cause of this?

What you may be seeing is what is known as sleeping pixels. Since it is a brand new machine, see if the return/exchange policy lets you get a replacement free, or if you might want an exchange under warranty. If they go away and don't bother actual images, I wouldn't worry about it. Sometimes if you very gently rub a sleeping pixel, it will go away quicker. But do not press too hard as that may damage the screen and void your warranty on it. So be careful!
