Corrupt .fcpevent File - Any Way to Get it Back?

I was 5 hours into keywording a FCPX event and FCPX suddenly crashed... then I tried to reopen FCPX like any other day and it now crashes every time while its loading that event.

I tried using the Pro Maintenance Tools Project Repair App to repair my event file.... it said "repair successful", yet FCPX continues to crash every time I try to launch the app. At least I've certainly figured out that this is the file in question because FCPX launches just fine if I remove this event folder from my Final Cut Events folder.

Is it possible to restore from any of the files in the "Old Versions" folder?

I've tried clicking on one of the files under "Old Versions" and every time I try to open one I get:

"/Volumes/Projects Mirror/Final Cut Events/2011-09 Water Vision/Old Versions is already open with the same identifier as /Volumes/Projects Mirror/Final Cut Events/2011-09 Water Vision, so the second document cannot be opened.

Move one of these documents out of your Final Cut Events folder. To avoid this problem, copy events from within Final Cut Pro."

Not even sure what that error means or how to resolve that......?

I'm so stumped right now it's crazy!!!!!! And I have hours of tagging, analysis and organization in that event that I MUST get back. Not to mention I even have a project file associated with that event that won't seem to reconnect media if I just create a new event and reimport the footage.

Any help and any possible solutions would be GREATLY appreciated!

I saw you posted this on another topic.

It means you have identical projects / events on another hard drive and FCP X can't cope with that.

Eject one of the drives and this won't happen.

Have you tried trashing your preferences?

Quirky faults like this can sometimes be fixed by clearing out FCP X's preferences (for some reason, they get knotted up from time to time).

Download Digital Rebellion's Preference Manager (free, simple to use, and quite safe).

http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/

With Pref Manager, you can backup the Prefs first, then if trashing makes no difference, you can restore all your settings.

If you trash them and don't restore them, you will need to go over your FCP X settings again, so it's a great idea to backup Preferences from time to time when FCP X is working well, then you can ditch the bad prefs and restore from your (Digital Rebellion) backup.

It's worth a try.

Hey Andy, I already tried doing precisely that using Digital Rebellion's software. I also tried using the Pro Maintenance Tools Project Repair App to repair my event file.... it said "repair successful", yet FCPX continues to crash every time I try to launch the app. At least I've certainly figured out that this is the file in question because FCPX launches just fine if I remove this event folder from my Final Cut Events folder.

I think you may have a corrupt file or a codec that FCP X can't handle, in your project.

In Finder, with FCP X shut down, try moving the media to another folder, then launching FCP X.

If it launches, the media will be offline. Shut down the application again and try moving one clip of each codec in the project back to the original folder (one at a time) and launch FCP X after each different codec is replaced.

You may be able to narrow it down that way.

If you can identify the rogue codec, you can use MPEG Streamclip to transcode that / those codecs to ProRes 422.

Does this make sense, or is there too much Chilean Merlot in there?

FCP has changed considerably over the past 2 years – as have its issues and possible solutions. Adding questions to a thread that's over a year and a half old really shortchanges the propects for getting your current problem addressed properly.

In short, you're far better off starting a new thread where people can focus on what you have to say rather than reconstruct references to comments in an obsolete thread.

Good luck.

Thanks, I have created a new event followed by adding all the media in. This way all my keywording and favs were maintained, 5200 clips. But, opened up fcpx and it hangs on the new event.

Last night I tried exporting the event XML(from a week old event backup) and re importing it. It seemed to have worked so far, but I'll know for sure soon. Would this sort of thing push some bugs out?

As for a new event and re importing. At this point, my assistant editor has spent about a month keywording, faving and organizing the event. Even some great edits were completed as compounds that reside in the event.

Are you suggesting that we start from scratch? Or just make a new event for trial and error and just start importing media from the last week or so...when things started to go wrong?

Wow you have one event with 5200 clips in it? Don't know what your hardware is but that is a huge event to process for FCP. You say FCP hangs. What do you mean? Are there any other events or only one? Do you have a project created with some of these clips added in the timeline? Were the compound clips created in the timeline or in the browser? It's hard to look for solutions with so many unknowns about your configuration. I was suggesting a new event with importing clips individually while checking if FCP was opening properly. Your main issue may be the size of this one event.

Hi,

It's a Mac Pro 8core. 32gb of ram. The drive is e-sata 7200rpm g tech raid. I'm running a fully up to date OS and fcpx.

It's the only event. All compounds were created in a project due to syncing with pluraleyes 2.

30 days of filming, well over 100hrs of footage, with 4 cameras (2 xdcam, nxcam and an fs700), 3 go pros and a stills camera.

We're using one event simply for organization purposes.

Fcpx stops responding with "loading EVENT" message during the opening screen.

Fcp opens no problem with no events.

We don't have many projects as all small edits became compound clips in the browser.

Is there a way to have keywords and smart collections over multiple events?

Also, when I delete all media out of the event folder at the finder level, the event won't load. But, an older back up will load with no media, displaying all media offline. When I try the same thing with the backup with the media in the event folder, the event will load....but as soon as I shut down and open fcpx again...or if it crashes for whatever reason....the event will no longer load. It's as if I open the back up, it then becomes corrupt.

It's weird.

I have tried exporting the XML of the backup event, import it...then same thing. As soon as I restart the software it won't load. I tried moving all media to a new event, same deal.

I've tried every digital rebellion tool for fcpx and nothing.

Yes you can assign the same keyword to clips in different events and when you create a smart collection from that keyword a smart collection will show up in each event that contains clips with that keyword. You have a very complicated situation here with an event that has mostly if not all compound clips in it. It does seem that some clip(s) are corrupted in some way. My suggestion of creating a new event and selectively reimporting clips into it should work for normal clips. I don't see how you can do that with compound clips as they exist only by reference in the event data base. Perhaps if you unhide i.e. restore your original event and then remove clips from it selectively in the finder trying to open FCP after each deletion that might help. Otherwise I am at a loss. Maybe Tom Wolsky, who is the expert here on FCP can offer some assistance.

Well, at this point I would really like to keep as much of the key wording and favoriting as possible. So I'll work with the back up event, great it up in to dailies maybe? Then go from there. I'm disappointed that an event clip has a cap, or maximum of clips. While not officially noted by apple, it seems like it exists. But really, I shouldn't be surprised. That is an awful lot of media in one clip.

I was sort of thinking it was a bad idea from the start....the whole, don't put all your eggs in one basket concept.

Thanks for your time, it means a lot!

I'll also post this on a new thread.

I had an issue with my last shoot where FCP X 10.0.8 would crash randomly at every import. So I broke up the imports into groups.. 1 2 3 4 etc. putting 100 or so clips into each group.

group 1 and 2 imported perfectly fine, when importing group 3 it'd crash. So I broke up group 3 into groups. 3.1 3.2 3.3 3.4 etc.

group 3.2 would crash final cut.

Now I had a lot less file to deal with so I started checking which file it wouldn't import...

It wouldn't import on one file, so i viewed it in finder, and indeed, it was a corupt file.

Maybe you have a clip in your huge file system that is corrupt?

Try creating a new event and import the footage into it group by group. See if it can succesfully import all your video files. If not, where does it stop? Then try to drill down and see which file it stops importing... That fiel will be the issue. (Hopefully it's just one file).

Good luck.
