Sony DSC-H1 or Canon S2-IS

Hi Darren,

I too am looking at the Sony DSC-H1 and contacted Sony who replied that the camera is compatible with Mac OS X (10.4) but that their software was PC compatible only. I have a feeling that loading pictures into iPhoto may be more involved if this is the case. Have you found out any more info or did you go with the Canon? The Canon is attractive also, but I wonder about the shutter speed.

I have the Sony DSC-H1. It's completely compatible with X and iPhoto. The included software is not very good and not worth the trouble to load. The ImageStation browser plugin is worth loading since it makes it easy to upload files to that website.

Thanks for the info. Have you had good experiences with the Sony? Its a present for my partner who is an amateur, not super tech savvy, but will be doing more photography when he retires.

So far so good. I have the DSC-H1 and the little DSC-S40 and they're both quite nice. The H1 overall has been very good. One thing that stood out for me was the autofocus light on both cameras. These cameras project a very bright orange beam to help focus in low light. Unfortunately, Sony's software is just sad. The upside is you can use iPhoto or EasyShare or even Image Capture.

Since I've never handled the Canon I can't really make a fair comparison.

Picking the right camera is more than just specs and compatibility. Both these cameras can do great things and the I don't think one has any great advantage over the other.

I am considering the S2 IS and this thread was very helpful. Does anyone happen to know anything about the soon-to-be-released S3 IS, i.e., whether any compatibility issues are expected? I have a trip coming up in July and want to use the camera for a couple months so I'm comfortable with it, so I don't have time to wait-and-see on the S3. TIA.
