songs already bought, wont download on new computer

all my songs i bought on itunes arent showing up in my new library. i bought a new laptop, downloaded itunes and went to the store and clicked "purchase" to get my songs. it says they are downloaded, but when i go to click on them to play it says that itunes cant find the file and askes if i want to locate it. now what? it also cant find basically most of my 2,000 songs i saved ot a external hard drive to bring over.

Logging into iTunes does not magically make content appear.

If the library exists or is backed up on an external drive, use that to put the content on the new computer.

If it is not on an external drive and you are in the US, then you can use iCloud to redownload the content. This will be a long tedious process as there is not "Download all" option. Each piece of media will need to be downloaded individually.
