MacBook Pro: light blue screen while closing programs

Hello to everybody!

I bought the MBP last July. Mac OSX 10.6.8 Leopard.

Until yesterday everything was ok.

I updated the software some days ago as requested. Every program is updated.

Here's the problem: closing the programs with cmdQ, the screen goes light blue. Forever. Yesterday twice: closing Outlook 2011 and, few minutes after rebooting, closing Google Chrome. I did the reboot and continued working, using also Outlook and Chrome. Nothing happened.

This afternoon, it happened again! This time closing Firefox. I didn't reboot, but I closed the screen as for standby, then re-opened, and the screen was ok again. Only Firefox was closed (as I pushed cmdQ before).

I have no idea of what's wrong with this Mac. Everything else seems to work perfectly. I am (was?) very happy to leave Windows for Mac...

Please help me!

I don't have strange programs and I'm so careful with it... (I have VMWare Fusion, but never used).

Please consider I'm new to Mac world, so I don't know what I can do by myself, I truly need someone to solve this!

Thanks in advance... I'd love to be still happy with my MacBook Pro!

Launch the Console application and look under "System Diagnostic Reports" for crash logs related to WindowServer. Select the most recent one and post the contents -- the text, please, not a screenshot. If you don't find a WindowServer crash log, then look under "User Diagnostic Reports" for application crash logs.

I called Apple support (in Australia) to make sure that they were aware of the problem. The guy that I spoke to said that he had had other calls about the blue screen on quitting applications but he would log my call to make sure that it was in their system.

I am not encountering anything else unusual, so your slowness problem may not be related to the EFI firmware. As a first step use "Disk Utility" (located in Applications -> Utilities folder) to check your hard drive and permissions.

Provided feed back to Apple about problem. They appear to be working on it. My work around is to turn off grahic switching in System Preferences, energy saver, uncheck box. Or if you don't want to and get a blue screen, close your cover until sleep starts and reopen. You should get your desktop back.

I thought Apple was working on the problem. They only may have fixed the problem for Lion users. I provided feedback to Apple about the blue screen before then. I have turned switching back on and rebuilt my startup cache by starting in safe mode (hold shift key down and then power key, keep holding shift key until progress bar appears). Once started, do a re-start to rebuild the cache. Have not had blue screen since then. Also, made sure all my add-ons in Firefox were up to date before rebuilding the startup cache. Problem does have something to do with graphic card switching. If you have not had the problem since turning off switching, this would confirm my belief.

My problem was not application specific and I don't use Firefox, so I doubt the problem has anything to do with Firefox. It might be that installing the latest Flash version has done the same thing as turning off graphic switching.

I confirm that following mrlou's post on 15 October I turned off graphic switching and have not had an occurrence since then. Since I use this MacBook on power adaptor most of the time, turning off graphic switching doesn't matter to me, but it sounds like rebuilding the start-up cache is the correct answer.

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564 has full instructions and also makes reference to a blue screen on startup

Further to my previous post, I turned automatic graphics switching back on and did a safe boot to reset the startup cache. Unfortunately after a further restart my Palm desktop, an old application running on Rosetta, appeared and I quit it immediately - and got the blue screen again!

Conclusion: Although resetting the startup cache is a nice idea and has some logic behind it, it didn't work for me. I am sticking with the turn off graphics switching work-around.

Note: Whenever the blue screen has happened to me, I have been quitting an application fast while the system has been doing something else in background. It doesn't seem to happen when the system is at rest.

My 3-month-old MBP started that (quitting Firefox bluescreen -- and the labels on Finder window were "unstable" to say the least.

Did a PRAM and SMC reset ... put those in the "search in communities" and at least 1 usable post will pop up with the information, or in the gray "magnifying glass" field top right of thes screen.

Two weeks later and no issues.

I'm another person who's had exactly the same as others here have been describing. My 17" MacBook Pro (early 2011) has been occassionaly freezing to a blue screen when exiting applications.

I'm just making a post to say that a new Firmware update for these machines has just appeared on my Software Update, EFI Firmware 2.3. I've just installed this successfully. To early to tell if this has stopped the blue screen freezes, since it was a sporadic occurrence. However, I had also noticed that the screen resolution of my display changed when I changed user, and the desktop was not properly displayed. This has now stopped after this new Firmware update, so fingers crossed...

Please post here if this upate is sorting the blue screens for you...!!!

Hi

On my MacBookPro8,2

I am having the same problem after quitting applications. it occured about month ago for the first time.. none of the latest upgrades from apple solved it.
Rapidly opening and closing applications with shortcuts makes the blue screen appear more often.

hopefully thers a fix soon or else i bring it back.
this is a nogo for me.
