Suddenly my phone says "cannot activate" after a year of service?

How can I "re-activate my phone" without restoring the entire thing? I don't understand why it would suddenly "de-activate"? I tried to connet to iTunes, but it says it cannot sync because my phone does not have the latest version of iTunes.
