How do I show the value of Males and Females in a Pie Chart?

I am creating a sheet with demographics for my parish. I have a column with "M/F" and in the rows assigned to specific names, I have placed an M if that person is Male and an F if that person is Female. I would like to show the ratio between males and females in a pie chart. I don't know too much about spredsheet software. How can I go about showing these values/ratios in a pie chart?

You can use the countif() function to count "M" and "F" in a different table, then graph that data:

the table "Data" contains the gender information which is summarized in the table "Summary"

Table summary cells are as follows:

B2=COUNTIF($'M/F', "="&LEFT(A2,1))

B3=COUNTIF($'M/F', "="&LEFT(A3,1))

To graph you select the range B2 to B3 (the data portion) of the Summary Table then select the Pie chart from the Graph tool

The Numbers User Guide, found under help, is surprisingly easy to work through and understand, so I'd suggest that as a first step. However, let me lead you through a couple of basics. 🙂

It's very simple to create a new table to summarize your main table, as Wayne did above. Click "Insert", then "Table", and you'll get to choose from several different kinds. Wayne's is Plain, with no headers. You might want a left header for your legend ("Male", "Female"). Then use the COUNTIF formula to point it to your column listing M of F for your congregation.

Once you've got your totals, just drag your pointer around the data you want to graph (the totals and the "Male"/"Female" legend), click the "Charts" icon at the top of the menu bar, and that should get you started. You'll get a box with things you can tweak (the "Inspector" window) to adjust the legend, the colors, etc.

You should create two tables using the Table Insert tool (like Vince said):

Then you can give the tables names by double clicking the name in the Sheets list (left):

Then you can enter the data (or copy and paste from your existing table). Then enter the formulas I provided previously, and graph. There is a user guide and lot's of Apple-provided movies (http://support.apple.com/videos/#productivitysoftware) that can help you get through the basics.

I hope this helps.

Well, there are such books. I bought one when I first got iWork:

However, althought not officially "for Dummies", I find I keep going back to this one for guidance. A much better book, IMHO, leading you step by step from the simple to the complex:

Congrats on getting your project to work, and I hope you'll come back if you have any other questions.
