Q: Thunderbolt Display will not wake up after sleep!!!!!!

It seems like a lot of us are having an issue with the THUNDERBOLT DISPLAY opening after it goes to sleep.  I have the display connected to a new mac mini server and I can not get it to wake up after it goes to sleep unless I unplug the power or the thunderbolt cable and then plug it back in.

Thunderbolt Display, Mac OS X (10.7.1)

    Hi Mirone,

Thanks for the steps. I am yet to follow the step but in between I downloaded a firmware update for my ATD and since then things are back to normal. ATD wakes up every single time. Its been a week. I will give it a couple of weeks more before I declare victory. But if the problem re-surfaces I will follow your steps.

    Thanks,

Well, my TBD gave up the ghost yesterday and would not awake no matter what. I know that my MBP video output was working as I hooked it up to an old cinema display I had. One call to Applecare, Genius bar appointment this AM (and the TBD was still deader than a door nail...). The Apple Store has by TBD and are replacing the power supply, logic board and cable. Let's see if that does the trick. Glad I purchased the AppleCare although it is still under the original warranty. Great to have a local Apple Store!

I got my TBD back from the Apple Store. After diagnostics, the replaced the combo cable. We will see if that solves the problem.

So far, replacing my combo cable (by Apple Store repair under AppleCare) has allowed my TBD to sleep and wake normally. It has only been five days. This seems to confirm the workaround that some people have reported on this thread of connected a separate TB cable to the port on the back of the TBD.

No joy. Replacing the combo cable didn't solve the problem. Back to the Apple Store!

    Hi,

I only got it fixed by REPAIR! Apple had to replace the all-in-one-cable. Something was broken/loose there. I thinke there wont be much other way....

    Cheers, Maik

The lastest update just fixed my TBD wake up issue with my MBP. I was having to unplug and plug in my TBD to get it to wake up. Since I applied the lastest update... happy to report it is working as it should now! Thanks Apple!

    Hey DeShark!

What 'update' are you referring to?

The 10.8.4 OS update or a thunderbolt firmware update?

    Thanks,

    Dev

In case this helps anyone, I have noticed that there does seem to be a difference between the machine going to sleep on its own and you putting it to sleep.

I use a great little piece of software called Alfred ( http://www.alfredapp.com/ ) and I've set up the F5 key to put my Mac to sleep, and I hit that key everytime I unplug it or before I plug it in to the TBD. (There are other shortcuts you could use - see http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1343 )

It does seem to make a difference when it comes to waking it up.

    FYI, you don't need Alfred.

Command-Option-Eject will do the same: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11242

    Mirone,

I have deleated the PowerManagement.plist file and reset the EnergySaver settings (which made another .plist file). In the EnergySaver settings, I have unchecked the put HD to sleep (as suggested earlier or on another post). No need to sleep the HD since it is a SSD.

I have a 17 rmbp using two TB to DVI adaptors, two external DELL monitors. On occasion, waking from a long sleep the monitor that is plugged into the front most TB port will not wake up unless I reboot computer. Unplugging and replugging the adaptor does not work.  The computer still sees the display, but it will not wake up.

I'll post back if the new settings work or not.

I would like to retract my previous statement... the update did not fix it. It does appear there is a difference when put to sleep versus it going to sleep. I setup the display to go to sleep when I move my mouse to the upper right hand corner and have been doing that alot. It comes back from that quite easily. I think the issue is waking the TBD when the machine wakes. Still not happy. I am going to the Apple store this morning. I will inquire about this and see what they have to say about it.

So far so good. Not sure what I did, but my TBD has been acting normally since I replaced the all in one cable during repair at the Apple Store, and install an SSD in my MBP 2011 13". 4 weeks of flawless performance by my TBD. I have no clue as to what the difference was as I had a few failures to wake after repairs. Go figure, but I'm happy!

I have not had any issues after unchecking the option "Put hard disk to sleep when possible" in the Energy Saver control panel. This was brought to my attention in another post, I tried it and it works.  Agreed, it should not be like this, but at least it works until another better solution is found.

I have the same terrible problem here in Brazil with my TBD and Mac Mini late 2012. Nobody on the local apple suport knows how to solve the issue.

I conected an external thunderbolt cable among the two devices and it solved the issue. But I think this cannot be a definite solution.
