AirPort is connected but no internet

Help please. All the sudden, I have no internet connection using AirPort extreme (1st gen). When I connect directly (without AirPort), I have a connection so my provider said it's the AirPort. My AirPort is working for music share, so I don't know what is the problem. I have tried hard reset, unplugging over night, restart... nothing works. Any help is appreciated. Thanks. Having said that, I also have an AirPort Express which is connected to play music so I can't say my AE is working??

After I posted the question, I replaced the AirPort Extreme with AirPort Express(my almost brandnew) for a test. I set it up as a replacement and left the original AirPort Express as it was (for AirTune). The light turned green but no internet:( I turned on WiFi on my iPhone but no internet connection. Does this sound like a problem with the modem to you? Since I can get a connection when I plug the cable directly, it is hard to explain to my provider.

It sounds like there is a communication problem between the modem and the AirPorts.

I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:

  • Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
  • While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
  • After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
  • Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes.
  • Power-up the base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes.
  • Power-up your computer(s).

In this basic configuration, computers connected to the base station, either by wire or wireless (as appropriate for the base station type), should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options.

If the combination of power recycling and a hard reset of the AirPort Extreme has not resolved the problem, the only other option would be to perform a "factory default" reset. If it still fails to allow Internet connectivity, then it may be possible that the unit has failed.

As I really don't have much knowledge, I just want to make sure what I did was possible to do--replacing AirPort Extreme with AirPort Express and have an internet connection?

I have a similar issue. I have an Airport Extreme network (n) connected to the wireless hub of my internet provider. Some days ago I had to wait minutes before internet was responding. Yesterday both my laptops no longer could connect to the AE network (but they could to the wireless network of my provider). At the same time, my iMac and iPhone had no problems with internet connection through the AE network. Today, iPhone still OK, iMac not OK.

I tried the procedure you described above. However, the factory reset of my AE failed. The amber light flashes quickly first, then after a while start flashing slowly endlessly.

I also use a Airport Express, connected to Airpost Extreme, for streaming music. The Airport Utility could not find, Express, only Extreme. Now that I completely disconnect Extreme, it finds Express.

I think the Airport Extreme is deceased, right?

Although the AirPort Extreme may be faulty, you may want to try the "factory default" a number of times to get it to "stick." If it still fails to perform properly, then the only thing I can recommend is to take it to your local Apple Store to have them confirm your findings.

Thanks for your reply, Tesserax.

{I have completely lost my internet connection... even if I connect directly. And it's back after 15 hours or so! but only with direct connect. So strange. They are supposed to come out and see what's wrong, curious what they will find. ( no need to reply, I just wanted to update)}
