downloading an excel file incorrectly

I am having difficulty downloading an excel file from our organizations web site. I am attempting to download a file that is exported as an excel spreadsheet. My issue is that it does not populate all of the fields for the first 95% of the file. The last 5% is good.

If someone else downloads the file and emails it to me there is not a problem, numbers will convert the file correctly. I also tried using Firefox in case it was a browser issue and the issue remains.

I am baffled.

I, too am baffled by the difference between the downloaded versus emailed file.

Disregarding the fact that the files don't seem to be the same, try selecting all the cells and setting the text color to black. Maybe the cells are populated but you can't see it. Just a thought.

You are sure you are downloading the exact same file that they are, right? You're not downloading an older or newer version of it?

If this is on a public website of your organization, can you provide a link to it so we can try it out?

Thank you both for your input. Unfortunately, the site is not public. I am confident that I am downloading the same file. I used my login to download the file on my mac. Then I used a PC with my same login and got a correct and fully populated file. I tested the idea of improper text color but all is set to black.

I believe that the excel file is generated on the fly with aspx and is not a static excel file. The data is stored on a SQL server with an Access front end.

I agree that the problem seems to be in executing the download. How do I fix that?

You may install the free LibreOffice which is an Office's clone.

If the problem is related to Numbers, LibreOffice will open the file.

I am selecting a report from a list. The parameters are set by my privileges. I am only able to download records for my state society, not the entire database. It is automatic.

There is a report that I can dowload where parameters are set and I can get it in PDF properly. IF i try to get that one in excel I get the same bad results when I open it with numbers.

I downloaded the file, sent it to a friend that has excel on his mac and he was able to open it and guess what, the entire database was populated correctly. It is not a download issue, it is a translation issue.

Oct 3, 2011 8:54 AM in response to delfromharrodsburg

OK, it's a translation issue but, if Apple engineers have no way to reach your web site, they will be unable to identify the problem.

Open the application Applications:Utilities:Console.app

to check if there is something reported about your download task.

If there is, post here some of these comments.

Maybe they will be sufficiently meaningful to put some of us on a track.

Would be useful to send the complete report to Apple.

But I guess that they would ask for a way to have access to the download process.

With the given excerpt, I just see, like you, that Numbers is unable to decipher the received datas (which we already knew).

I'm an end user like you.

If you may send the file to my mailbox, I would try to open it with LibreOffice and with Numbers.

If it opens in LibreOffice and don't in Numbers and if you agree, I will file a bug report but you must know that we will have no feedback. With a bit of luck, we would just discover that a future version will be able to open the offending doc.
